The world is overwhelmed with Americana - our cultural identity is a little mouse in bed with an elephant - without government support the mouse will be suffocated! Mr Manley it's my money too and I am a proud Canadian, so I want to see my culture reflected on the big screen and on the little screen. What were you thinkingFlag

Name: Ross Manson on Apr 23, 2003State:Country: CAComments: The Government of Canada's cuts to film and TV funding is essentially a dismantling of inidiginous Canadian programming. At the same time, John Manley's budget provides significant incentives for US production north of the border . This is a shameful abdication of responsibilty for the protection of our own culture in the face of a much more powerful nation. I will not vote liberal if these cuts are implemented. I am very ANGRY about this!!!!Flag

Name: Andrew Pyper on Apr 23, 2003State:Country: CAComments: Given the enormous (and now apparently unavoidable) amount of money wasted on the gun registry and new bilingualism ventures, not to mention increased tax breaks to US TV and film productions shooting in Canada, the 25 million cut to at-home Canadian production is at best a negligent oversight, and at worst, a wilful dismantling of this essential cultural industry. Reinstate the funding now.Flag

This move, by the way, is accompanied by an increase in tax credits for foreign film and television productions. These cuts will effectively put an end to almost any further production of indigenous Canadian programing, in either English or French, unless the "international market" asks for it and is prepared to pay for it. In Canada alone, the four cornerstones of film production, the money, market, mandate and moxie, are simply not available in sufficient quantities and in the same place and the same time to do the job. By now we all know that the centre of the square, talent, is not the problem. If our national government is going to withdraw from this sector, or merely remain present on a strictly symbolic level, then it seems less than likely that our creative community can continue to function in this area of our country's --or any country's-- cultural life. Perhaps this is what Canadians want but we believe that this is not the case. If you agree, please read on, add your name to the list and pass it on. Thank you, John Van Burek Attention!! This petition will be forwarded to the governing bodies of the CTF to protest the recent decision to cut funding for Canadian domestic television projects. This funding is instrumental in allowing production of truly Canadian "home grown" programming. These funds have supported Canadian programs such as The Eleventh Hour, Royal Canadian Air Farce, The Red Green Show, An American in Canada, The Sean Cullen Show, This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Made in Canada, The Newsroom plus countless cultural and children's programs. Shows that we are proud of. Shows that gave us a voice. Shows that we will stand up for. Show your support and help us save our culture! 1. Winnifred Jong - Colborne, Ontario 2.
