ITALIAN TEXT.  Lo scorso dicembre 2010 a Taranto è stata riaperta provvisoriamente alle visite la Cripta del Redentore, la più antica sede di culto cristiano della città, riscoperta dall’archeologo Luigi Viola nel 1899. La Cripta è interamente ipogea, scavata nel tufo accanto a una grotta che ospita una fonte perenne di acqua sorgiva. Secondo la leggenda riportata nell’‘Historia Sancti Petri’, vi si sarebbe fermato l’apostolo Pietro e vi avrebbe battezzato i primi cristiani di Taranto. L’ambiente della Cripta era originariamente una tomba a camera della necropoli della città greco-romana, e fu riadattato al culto cristiano. Fu ricavata un’abside, su cui si dipinsero affreschi di alta qualità raffiguranti il Cristo Pantocratore tra la Vergine e san Giovanni; altri affreschi furono dipinti sulle pareti laterali. Gli studiosi hanno datato i più recenti all’ IX-XII secolo. Purtroppo, oggi il monumento versa in condizioni gravi: la staticità ne è compromessa e gli affreschi appaiono gravemente degradati. L’Amministrazione Comunale di Taranto ha predisposto un progetto dettagliato per il monumento: la sua tutela statica, la sistemazione dell’area e il restauro degli affreschi, ma per ragioni di bilancio non può finanziare l’intera opera.   Noi firmatari di questa petizione non accettiamo che la Cripta del Redentore, straordinaria testimonianza del passato della città di Taranto, sia ancora una volta dimenticata e lasciata in abbandono. Chiediamo alla Regione Puglia e al Ministero per i Beni Culturali di contribuire al finanziamento dei lavori di consolidamento e restauro del monumento, e garantirne in tal modo la definitiva riapertura al pubblico. Noi firmatari ci impegnamo a tener viva la nostra attenzione nei confronti del monumento, affinché sia consegnato nelle migliori condizioni alle generazioni future. 

ENGLISH TEXT.  The last december the Crypt of the Redeemer in Taranto, Italy, has been provisionally re-opened to the visitors. It is the oldest site of Christian worship in the city, which was casually re-discovered by the archaeologist Luigi Viola in 1899. The Crypt is entirely carved into the local limestone, just aside a grotto hosting a perennial spring of water. According to a legend reported in the ‘Historia Sancti Petri’, Peter the Apostle would have stopped there on his way to Rome, and baptized the first Christians in Taranto. The Crypt was originally one of the chamber tombs of the necropolis of the greek-roman city of Taras, and was adapted to the new Christian worship. An apse was carved and high-quality frescoes were painted on it, depicting Christ ‘the Pantokrator’ between saint John and the Virgin Mary; others were painted on the side walls. For the most recent frescoes the Scholars have proposed dates ranging from the 9th to the 12th centuries A.C. Unfortunately, the monument is currently in bad condition: the structure is under threat and the frescoes are visibly deteriorated. The Municipality of Taranto has planned detailed protective measures for the monument, concerning its static reinforcement, settlement of the site and restoration of the frescoes. However, the severe budget problems of the Municipality do not allow to finance the works.  We, the undersigned, do not accept that the Crypt of the Redeemer, an extraordinary heritage of the past of Taranto, is once more neglected and left to degradation. We appeal to the Regional Government of Puglia and the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage (MiBAC) to grant the funding of the works to save and fully restore the monument, in such a way that it is permanently opened to the visitors. We, the undersigned, commit ourselves to keep our concern for the monument, in order it to be duly left to the forthcoming generations.

FRENCH TEXT.  Au mois de décembre 2010 à Tarente (Italie) la Crypte du Rédempteur a été provisoirement rouverte au public. Il s’agit du plus ancien lieu de culte chrétien de la ville, redécouvert par l’archéologue Luigi Viola en 1899. La crypte est entièrement souterraine, creusée dans du tuf tout près d’une grotte hébergeant une éternelle source d’eau. D’après la légende rapportée dans l’« Historia Sancti Petri », l’apôtre Pierre s’y serait arrêté pour baptiser les premiers chrétiens de Tarente. A l’origine une tombe à chambre appartenant à la nécropole de la ville gréco-romaine, la crypte a ensuite été reconvertie au culte chrétien. Une abside fut creusée, l’on y peignit des fresques remarquables représentant le Christ Pantocrator entouré de la Vierge et de Saint Jean ; d’autres fresques furent réalisées sur les parois latérales. Selon les spécialistes, les plus récentes seraient datées entre le IXème et le XIIème siècle. Malheureusement, le monument est aujourd’hui dans de très mauvaises conditions: sa stabilité est en péril et ses fresques sont visiblement dégradées. L’administration communale de Tarente a prévu un ensemble de mesures pour la sauvegarde du monument: à savoir son maintien statique, l’aménagement du site et la restauration des fresques mais à cause d’un problème de budget, la mairie ne peut pas financer l’intégralité des travaux. En tant que signataires de cette pétition, nous refusons que la crypte du Rédempteur, extraordinaire témoignage du passé de la ville de Tarente, soit une fois de plus oubliée et laissée à l’abandon. Nous demandons à la Regione Puglia et au Ministero per i Beni Culturali de contribuer au financement des travaux de consolidation et de restauration du monument, garantissant ainsi sa réouverture définitive au public. En tant que signataires, nous nous engageons à suivre avec attention la situation du monument, afin qu’il soit remis dans les meilleures conditions possibles aux générations futures. GERMAN TEXT. Die Krypta des Erlösers im italienischen Tarent wurde im Dezember letzten Jahres provisorisch für Besucher wiedereröffnet. Sie ist die älteste Stätte christlichen Kultes in der Stadt und im Jahre 1899 zufällig vom Archäologen Luigi Viola wiederentdeckt worden.
Die Krypta ist gänzlich in der Kalkstein der Region eingemeißelt, direkt neben einer Grotte, der eine Wasserquelle entspringt.
Der Legende „Historia Sancti Petri“ nach soll der Apostel Petrus auf seinem Weg nach Rom dort angehalten haben und die ersten Christen in Tarent getauft haben. Ursprünglich war die Krypta eine Grabkammer der Nekropole der griechisch-römischen Stadt Taras und wurde an den neuen christlichen Kult angepasst. Eine Apsis wurde gegraben und mit qualitativ hochwertigen Fresken verziert, die Christus „den Pantokrator“ zwischen heiligem Johannes und Jungfrau Maria zeigen. Andere Heilige wurden an die Seitenwände gemalt.
Gelehrte datieren die Entstehung der jüngsten Fresken ins 9. bis 12 Jahrhundert. Leider ist das Monument momentan in schlechtem Zustand. Der Bau ist einsturzgefährdet und die Fresken sind sichtbar verfallen.
Die Stadt Tarent hat detaillierte Maßnahmen zur Erhaltung des Monuments geplant, besonders was die Verstärkung der Statik, das Fundament der Anlage und die Restauration der Fresken angeht.
Jedoch lassen die Haushaltsprobleme der Stadt die Finanzierung der Restaurierungsarbeiten nicht zu.
Wir, die Unterzeichner, akzeptieren nicht, dass die Krypta des Erlösers, ein außergewöhnliches Erbe aus der Vergangenheit Tarents, ein weiteres Mal vernachlässigt und dem Verfall überlassen wird. Wir appellieren an die Regionalregierung von Puglia und an das italienische Ministerium für kulturelles Erbe (MiBAC), die Finanzierung der Arbeit zu unterstützen, um das Monument zu retten und so wiederherzustellen, dass es dauerhaft für Besucher geöffnet werden kann. Wir, die Unterzeichner, verpflichten uns für das Monument zu sorgen, damit es für kommende Generationen in gebührendem Zustand hinterlassen wird. (Uebersetzung von Fabio Toraldo).
