Comments: I use methadone on a daily basis for pain management, NOT for heroin management (I've never taken street drugs.) It is a miracle drug. I never feel high, EVER, and my pain is well controlled. Let's work together to dispel the myths of pain medication while also being sure that such medication does not end up in the hands of abusers looking for a quick, and possibly deadly, high.

Comments: I am sick and tired of being in pain and treated like I am less than human. My Doctor of four years who has been treating my chronic pain has just abandoned me. Yes with a severe chronic pain issue. Because I had a nervous break down trying to take the steps to become more independant. Yes I would like to get of the Social Security payroll that I have only been on for the last 8 months. She thought I was getting addicted to my meds and kicked me to the curb. How nice. Well that isnt the case. Do I deserve to be treated like crap no. I once was a productive citizen in society. This is all because she cant take a chance with her license. After four years of treatment. That means I am sitting here after doing what she told me to do with no pain meds and no where to turn except to inpatient myself for methodone. I dont think so. She agrees I will always be in pain but she will not treat it anymore. Thanks Doc and thanks my government for making me feel less than human and kicking me down again just when I was about to get up.

Comments: A work related injury has changed my life for ever,(so far) i'm not real happy with the medical prof.that I hav encountered that have muched called me a lier fake and make me feel like a fraud. Iv been with my ONLY wife since 1978 to present and due to depression almost lost that.Thank god for zoloft.I was introduced to my pain Dr. after failed back surgrey and he has been great. My wife and family have put up with alot including almost losing our home. Public asst.was a joke $200.00 a month to feed a four person family. We hung in there and still are.The pain level is high today but i know its up and down and roll with it.KEEP THE FAITH AND TRY TO MAKE THE BEST OF EVERY DAY IF NOT FOR YOU FOR THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU!

Comments: Chronic pain suffers are being treated like second class citizens by there doctors, because of doctors fears of prescribing adequate level of pain medications will cause the Authorites to look at the doctor as a criminal. when the criminals are actually a society who lets people suffer in agony for years until they can no longer tolerate the pain and take their own life.

Comments: Was in a plane crash and i have multiples of problems with my back and neck and head. Ruptured disc, severe headaches, numbness in my legs and toes and much more. I am so tired of suffering all the the time and not being able to enjoy just simple life. I don't ask for much, just to be able to enjoy my wife and kids and to be able to do some things with them. This is no life to live! No pain meds seem to help and no depression meds help. I've even gone to the extent to having shock treatments, with no improvement. All the things i use to enjoy doing such as flying planes, traveling with my family and much more are all gone. I often ask myself, why go on, this is not living even a low standard.

I HAD 4 SPINAL SURGERIES WITH NO RELIEF.THE LAST ONE CAUSED PERMINATE DAMAGE TO MY S1 NERVE THAT CONTROLS THE WHOLE RIGHT LEG.IALSO HAD A FEW TO MANY INJECTIONS IN THE SPINE. I HAVE DDD ALSO 6 MORE HERNIATED DISCS THROUGHOUT MY SPINE. I WAS TOLD THAT MY SPINE IS COLLAPSING AND IT LOOKS LIKE IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS POSIBLE WHEELCHAIR BOUND. I'M 39 YRS YOUNG AND HAVE 2 KIDS. MY DAUGHTER HAS THE SAME CONDITION AND HAS HAD SPINAL FUSION ON L 3/4/5/S 1. SHE ALSO KNOWS THE PAIN LEVELS WHICH SHE ALSO SAID SHE CAN'T STAND. WE HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING OUT THERE, AND LIKE EVERYONE ELSE THE MEDS DON'T HELP DUE TO THE SMALL DOSAGE. I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO SIT, STAND OR WALK FOR LONG PERIODS. THE MEDS THEY DO GIVE LAST FOR SUCH A SHORT TIME. I DO WAKE UP AND DRED GETTING OUT OF BED BECAUSE IT TAKES SO LONG TO GET MOVING. IF I DID NOT HAVE MY FAMILY SUPPORT ESPECIALLY MY KIDS, I THINK OF ENDING LIFE SOME DAYS. WE NEED BETTER, STRONGER MEDS TO HELP THE REAL PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO REALLY NEED THE HELP.

Comments: This seems to be the norm out there. We are all very concerned about all people out there that live with pain on a daily basis,I am one of theose people . I don,t understand whats makes us diffferent from any other patient in the medical field. If you are sick you should recieve the medication and a doctor that cares to treat you. If I had an infection there would not be a problem recieving treatment. There are 76 milliom Americans out there suffering everyday in pain . I am one of those people. I know in our state there are only 8 or so doctors that actualy treat pain. something has to happen in this state to make changes. We can join together to be a force to be delt with. You would be suprise what even one person can do so lets join together and help each other. I have alot of ideas to share if someone out there would like to contact me.

Comments: I have had chronic pain for 50 years and only in the last 2 years have I found medical help in the form of a pain clinic that did not view me as as a "drug seeker." The lack of understanding or belief in my chronic problems have plagued my medical care for years. Medical training needs to include education about the very real disease of chronic pain and train doctors to recognize and treat it rather than label those of us who suffer from it as people just wanting drugs. The medical community has been extremely slow to respond to the millions of people with chronic pain. They need to be alerted to a syndrome that has been around forever, unbearable chronic pain. We deserve the same respect by physicians as other disease sufferers and we deserve treatment, not rebuke.

NOW THAT I CAN NO LONGER AFFORD TO SEE A PAIN MANAGEMENT DOCTOR, I SUFFER, EVERYDAY. IT ONLY GETS WORSE AS I GET OLDER, AND THIS ALL STARTED WHEN I WAS 8 YEARS OLD. I AM NOW 28, BUT DON'T KNOW IF I CAN CONTINUE. THE PAIN IS EXTREME, BUT I TRY TO KEEP BUSY, ACTIVE, POSITIVE. I MUST STRUGGLE THOUGH EVERY DAY JUST TO STAY EMPLOYED. IT WAS TOLERABLE WHEN I HAD PROPER CARE, BUT NOW I CAN'T AFFORD IT, JUST CAN'T PAY FOR THOSE EXPENSIVE MEDICATIONS ANYMORE. PRAY FOR ME. WHERE IS THE MERCY

Comments: As a 49 year old woman who has endured 8 spinal surgeries and lives in constant and most times, unbearable pain due to failed back surgeries every waking moment of every day, of every month, year after year. I am signing this and any other petition I can find in hopes that the medical society will some day feel that treating people like us is as important a part of practicing medicine. I am so tired of the stigma attached to "chronic Pain" and am so tired of the deplorable treatment we get when be shuffled to different Dr.s. The facts that the most effective treatment involves controversial opiate drugs - the DEA is more concerned that these drugs may fall into the hands of those who abuse them that they are about helping those of us who live each day in hell. It seems noone really cares about helping those with Chronic Pain, and it seems especially if you look "normal" and are managing to walk into an office. It does not matter how many hours you lose at work, your quality of life or whether you wish you could just have the nerve to kill yourself.....sometimes it seems like the ONLY way to escape the hell of Chronic, excruciating pain. There is no sympathy for us...only skepticism....are we in fact a drug dealer looking for a supply, or are we abusing our own meds...or selling them to children There MUST be a better way and hopefully we find it soon. I cannot imagine living much longer like this.

Comments: Hi. I stumbled on your petition. It tears me apart every time I read one of these narratives. I dont want to use the word "story" because it invokes the idea of make-believe. Unless people live and experience chronic pain they have no understanding, nor sympathy. I am a bit discouraged that there are only 185 or so signatures. From the different bulletin boards I have read, there should be thousands on it. My only disagreement with a registry of sorts is that we give away yet more of our privacy. I am going to sign it. In my heart, I dont believe a single politician gives a shit...excuse the french. On one bulletin board, someone had the right idea...a march on Washington! The special interest groups do it, so why not us We are voters, and we are a special interest group, and we are being discriminated against. Maybe there is a way to start a class action law suit against the DEA and FDA for their strongarm tactics against the doctors that treat us. I dont know-but something needs to be done. The friggin' doctors operated on me, made no guarantees of success, caused my condition to be worse, requiring more surgeries, then they want to limit or stop my pain meds. I think we need to be more aggressive in our approach.

Comments: I have suffered with chronic intermittant pain from interstitial cystitis for 30 years. I still get treated like an addict by doctors. I don't know who to turn to. When I have a flare, it is excrutiating. I have endured unbelievable pain. I feel that I am being pushed to have surgery which is experimental. The drug "Elmiron" prescribed for IC can kill your liver. Vicodin and other pain medications laced with tylenol also cause chirrosis of the liver. I would rather have my pain managed by pain meds than surgery or medications that will cause me a painfull death of liver disease. Doctors do not monitor liver enzymes. They prescribe and tell you to come back in 6 months. I don't trust doctors anymore. At times when I am in #10 pain I have suicidal thoughts. The pain has ruined my life. I am on disability for depression. Depression is not my chief complaint, the pain is. It seems that pain is not considered a chief complaint. It has to be something else to get disability. In my case my psychiatrist signed the letter because no one seemed to recognize the PAIN as my problem, I took the psychiatric diagnoses. The depression is actually secondary to the PAIN!!!!

Comments: i have been in CONSTANT PAIN since april 1st 2004. After 3 lumbar surgeries(1 in 1995,1 in 2004 and another in 2005)i hurt every day and have just been dumped by my doctor. the 1995(age 17) surgery worked out fine and i was back to work a few months later but the more recent surgeries failed(botched in my opinion) and the surgeon called it degenerative disc disease, primary physician called it failed back syndrome, and the doc at the interventional pain clinic called it both. i was told i would be in pain for the rest of my life but he would only prescribe extemely low doses due to his fear i would become addicted. if due to pain i would have to take meds the rest of my life how does addiction come into play. I am now thirty years old and unable to work and unable to get insurance(paid into ssi and ssd but was denied so far due to my age) and doctors in my area only want people with "real" insurance. they also say they are referring people to the interventional pain consultants across the river in lewiston idaho. this is the outfit that just dumped me after almost four years. between the back pain and withdrawls of being shut down cold turkey from four years or prescribed narcotics i don't forsee myself having a snowballs chance in hell of surviving. i have had to use marijuana to help keep my pain level down and to counter some side effects of the pain meds(diminished appetite, head spins, and nausea). i have been treated like an addict from the day i crawlwed into the emergency room. i was treated like an addict before the 2004 surgery and treated like an addict for months before the 2005 surgery. did i mention i have been treated like an addict since they fused me in 2005 and every day since i have scar tissue build up, a tear at s1, and nerve damage affecting my right leg. I'm sick of over paid medical "professionals" taking one look at me and judging me without even laying hands on me. i don't know what to do and i feel i've been backed into a corner that i can't get out of.

We have both had those and they do not relieve us! So, now we are currently going broke going back to our dr. in FL all the time!! This is rediculus, what is up with only shots as an option They are only temporary for some people and no help for others. This horrible!! Go back to FL or withdraw in pain!! My current doctor's daughter has a need for pain pills, that's why he came out retirement to treat her! Oh, he is an anestesiologist also, and says that injections can dangerous!
