Name: Anna Hurley on Apr 3, 2004State: NYCountry: USComments: I purposely took every class that Norman Cowie taught. He really formed my experience at Fordham. I feel so fortunate to have had him as a professor and a mentor. Norman Cowie is a huge asset to Fordham's faculty and to the visual arts community as a whole. I feel sorry that future students will be so unjustly deprived of his talents.Flag

Name: Daniel Flood on Apr 3, 2004State: NYCountry: USComments: Norman Cowie has taught me more in one semester of his video course about editing and presentation of information as well as artistic expression than I learned in 2 years of interning and 2 years of communications courses at Fordham. As I have found to be the case, Fordham often lets such great professors slide through their fingers in exchange for less qualified teachers. Please help turn this around and therefore help students learn.Flag

Name: Isabella Bruno on Apr 3, 2004State: NYCountry: USComments: I would like to share a personal experience that testifies to Professor Cowie's love of his work and engagement with Fordham students. I am a BFA student (dance major) minoring in architecture. My interest in space and site has grown to include the realm of film as a way to directly illustrate movement through a specific site. Regrettably, with my demanding schedule I can not afford time to pursue this interest through the film/video dept. But on one particularly pertinent occasion Professor Cowie has taken up to an hour of his own time to discuss my ideas, show tools to help me begin expressing my ideas and write down other avenues I can go down to find the specific information my type of project would need. All of this time and energy he gave to me, knowingly full well that I was not one of his students, nor even mildly related to the film/video dept. From my experience nad the testimony of other students, I think Fordham U. is losing a great deal by letting go of such a mentor.Flag

His teaching style complements the work of the rest of the staff at Fordham. It would be unfair to let him go. Unfair to Norman And unfair to the students to which he has offered so much knowlwdge. Letting Norman go would be absurd.Flag

He was my favorite professor at Fordham and helped me motivate myself to improve my work. It would be a shame for future Fordham students not to have a chance to blossom under his guidance.Flag

There is no doubt in my mind that this University is better off because of his work. He was instrumental in creating the new Visual Arts complex and is a constant source of advice, support and encouragement for his students. In October, we presented letters and a petition signed by over 400 students and alumni supporting Norman CowieFlag

Future generations of students at Lincoln Center will not have the chance, as I have, to benefit from Professor Cowie's tutelage because of Fordham's lapse of judgement in this situation.Flag
