Name: Barry Smoler on Mar 24, 2004State: CACountry: USComments: as an alumni of fordham university i feel that i now have no justified reason to give back to the fordham community now that it has taken away the only thing that kept me there. norman cowie was the conscience of a visual arts department that will greatly suffer as a result of his "departure." during my three years at fordham, i made it a point to take a class with professor kassabian and cowie every semester and have never felt as challenged while in their classes. it is because of them, especially norman cowie, that i was able to graduate with a sense of pride and confidence that i now know is linked direclty with the teachers and not the institutions in which they teach. i thank them for making me a better person. i certainly would not have stayed at fordham if it were not for them and definitely feel like i am a better citizen and student because of norman cowie.Flag

Name: Tami Gold on Mar 25, 2004State: NYCountry: USComments: I am a professor of Film and Media Studies at Hunter College. Just last week, Norm Cowie was a guest speeker and presenter of his work to our students. My students were sitting at the edge of their seats throughout the three hour presentation and absolutely engaged with his work -- they asked questions about all aspects of meaning, technique, form and intention. What amazed me was how Professor Cowie engaged with each student and consequently how each students interacted with him. Professor Cowie is an excellant teacher, artist and intellectual. Norman has the ability to create an exciting environment where creative and technical skills are at the center of his teaching. He encourages a very diverse student body to engage with each other. One of Norman Cowie's unquestionable strengths is how he can get his students to understand the necessity of being both a critical thinker and creative person. I strongly encourage you to reconsider your decision and grant Norman Cowie tenure at Fordham University. If you are truely interested in your students you would act on this immediately.Flag

I cannot believe that you have ignored the impression Norm made on us and are thus losing a really valuable asset to the community. I am glad that I have already graduated and was able to have Norm during my schooling.Flag

Name: Rachel Fujita on Mar 25, 2004State: NYCountry: USComments: Cowie has been one of the most outstanding professors at Fordham who has enlightened me to producing challenging and provocative work, that has won me festival recognition. I can't seem to understand why Fordham would want to let him go when he does nothing wrong but teach, and teach very well.Flag

Name: Sapna Maloor on Mar 25, 2004State: NYCountry: USComments: Norman Cowie has been an exemplary professor and mentor. Prof. Cowie's support and encouragement has helped me to become an editor in a major publishing house, and to attend law school. Prof. Cowie has enabled his students to intelligently question and critique the media, as well as social, political and cultural standards so as to equip us with the requisite foundation to re-shape OUR world and future. It is a great disappointment that a university held in such high regard in the New York community has chosen to deny tenure to one of its most forward-thinking and dedicated faculty.Flag

Name: Rachel Webster on Mar 25, 2004State: NYCountry: USComments: In times like these, it is a university's duty to champion the bold, innovative and challenging curriculum exemplified by professors such as Norman Cowie. There is very little point to give our money to such timid institutions of "higher education" who fail this simple obligation. Mediocrity has aggressively overwhelmed American culture, politics, and thought. For the promise of our future, we must actively combat mediocrity in the few remaining bastions of intellectual freedom we have. This university should be no exception. And, to those of you in a position of power, you should be proud to shoulder this task to influence the integrity of Fordham. Shame on you for not understanding this. I fear you may not deserve your privileged role. Sincerely, Rachel Webster Associate Producer NOW with Bill Moyers Fordham AlumnusFlag

Name: Peter Colapietro on Mar 25, 2004State: NYCountry: USComments: I agree highly that this is a public embarrassment to the University and to us all. I am class of 2003 and can say without a doubt that Norman was one of the best. Actually out of my 4 years at Fordham, three professors stood out with excellence. Only 3. And Norman was one of them. It is no wonder our nation is going where it is, in a negative direction, mostly because not enough is done to protect our educators. They make the foundations for our youth and throwing away a great teacher (there arenFlag

Your decision to instead kick him to the curb denigrates the Fordham legacy, and is embarrassing enough to make me, as an alumni, ashamed of my alma mater.Flag

Name: Stewart Guthrie on Apr 1, 2004State: FLCountry: USComments: As a visual anthropologist and a former colleague of Prof. Cowie's, I strongly urge that the denial of his tenure be reversed. Prof. Cowie's work appears very good to excllent in every regard: teaching (his students are enthusiastic), professional and university service (I have found him dedicated and effective as a member of several committees), and scholarly and artistic production (his videos, for example, are trenchant and powerful). Prof. Cowie is an exemplary member of the university community. Denial of tenure would be a serious mistake. Name: RIKA WELSH on Apr 1, 2004State: MACountry: USComments: Norman Cowie has been a collegue of mine in the community media movement and in media literacy development initiatives for more than 15 years. How a University's faculty would not have high regard for Mr. Cowie's ability to make a valuable contribution through his wonderfully varied fields of expertise ... to me only speaks to the ignorance of the deciding faculty. It reflects the low caliber of this institution's understanding of the current media environment. This is such an important field, my regret for the Students, many of whom whom I have met over the years and who had clearly benefitted from Mr. Cowies excellent expertise.Flag

Name: Martha Rosler on Apr 1, 2004State: NYCountry: USComments: I have known Norman Cowie, first as a student and then as a colleague, for many years. Norman Cowie is a highly respected member of the international art world, with a long track record of accomplishment. His work is screened at such important institutions as the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Donnell Media Center, in New York, as well as the Pacific Film Archive and many overseas venues. It has also been included in numerous festivals such as the Human Rights Watch International. Cowie received a Best Short Film prize in Melbourne as well as Best Experimental Documentary at Iowa City and Best Documentary at the prestigious Athens festival. His work bespeaks an outstanding, long-term commitment and a degree of integrity that must command our gratitude as well as respect. I have in the past invited Norman as a guest teacher in my classroom, and I know that he is a highly motivated and motivating teacher whose efforts are also effective far beyond the classroom.Flag
