Comments: Any "for profit" functions such as the road race that are not specifically sponsored by the Town could be asked to at least contribute toward the coverage. I don't believe they need to bear the entire cost because the event is participated in by many town citizens and is considered a part of our annual celebration.

Comments: I believe these events not only serve the residents of Branford, but are also an effective means of bringing other CT residents to the town. I'm sure the business generated from these events is more than the 121K expenditure on the part of the town.

Comments: I actually would like to do more to encourage Branford to do more public events all over town and be a destination town and there are many businesses in town, investors, and interest groups, that will support the increase of costs or would donate and advertise with public events to off set the burden to taxpayers, ask them its that simple. I say it all the time the more people invest into their town the more it shows on the type of town we are! The town will always have a return on investment in any entertainment and life improvements or recreation & social activities and events we do.

Comments: Many of these events have turned into money making endeavors for most vendors and therefore they should bear a portion of the event costs. Additionally, we as taxpayers, have no control over how those costs are allocated. Are we paying time and a half for town employees? Are we paying for non-essential workers? Are we paying extra for employees who are on duty anyway?

Comments: Not all Branford residents participate in these events, for example the elderly, however they are still paying for them. I think the town should have a set limit on how much it will contribute to each event and then the event itself must cover the rest. Having such events in town make Branford a great place to live but are taxes are already so high. There needs to be more of a balance.

Comments: Branford Festival and other events should be responsible for paying for Police, Fire and other Public Service support. It is NOT fair for the taxpayers to continue to take on this cost with the state of the economy and other budget constraints.

Comments: I have no problem with these charges for Public Events being part of the town budget, but I am open to other suggestions. I know the Branford Festival sends out solitations each year and the Fireworks Committee usually has a booth at the Festival where people can donate money towards the fireworks display. Thus donations help contribute to these events. I'd be interested to learn of other ways to fund these events,

Comments: Cost saving measures regarding public safety would be desireable. Do other towns do less and yet provide adequate public safety? Are there mandates that could be addressed? I'm all for town events and they are an important part of our social capital. Do town workers get time and a half? Are there any costs cutting measures that have not been looked into? Right now the Senior Center needs more funding and given our growing senior population I think we need to strike a balance.

Comments: Public events like the Festival, among others, make Branford such a special place to live, work, and play. If anything, spending should be expanded to include the promotion and expansion of events like the Jazz Series and additional initiatives to further increase the cultural landscape of Branford and bring business and vistors to the Shoreline.

Comments: There is so much more to consider when thinking of these events as burdens to the Town. These events bring people to our community on an annual basis. These are events that folks can attend at no cost. It brings many people to our green for the first time during Festival time. The fireworks are partially funded by the Town so if you are going to charge that event then you may as well cancel it all together as the funds just aren't coming in any longer and we will not be able to raise the additional funds. The two parades should be combined to one Memorial Day parade with a service on Veteran's day. The road race, Ray Figlewski has put our little town on the map throughout the world because of this road race. I would think this one through as well. The holiday parade, really? This is the most attended parade throughout the year! This is a kickoff to the holiday season. Are you kidding? I had been involved with the Festival on the committee and board level for over 20 years, on the fireworks committee appointed by the Selectman's office over ten years ago, I am a founder of the Holiday parade and very involved in this community. Go ahead and take away what many of us have worked so hard to create over the past 20 years.

Comments: It is these public events that make Branford a COMMUNITY. It is this sense of community that allows Branford to have VOLUNTEER Fire Depts. How much would it COST to have a FULLY STAFFED PAID FIRE DEPT? A lot more than sponsoring Community Building Public Events!!!!!

Comments: "...one tenth of one percent of the total town budget." So, talk about a value-added part of the budget! Wow! That's terrific! When you see tens of 1,000's of people -- families, kids, friends, visitors, all having a great time during the Festival, you realise how much this reflects on the quality of our town. Remember that the tiny amount our budget allocates to special events like the Festival is completely overshadowed by the countless hours people volunteer to enable these events to be the wonderful experiences they always are. To even pose this question is kind of sad really, especially now when we all need to be finding ways of increasing connection and community. If money is the primary concern, then how about we consider issues related to portions of the budget that are more than 1/10th of 1%? Wouldn't that be a more economic use of people's limited time, not to mention the finite engagement of the RTM? Just a thought...
