Comments: recently I was shocked to learn that several Canadian provinces still retain corporal punishment, taken in our traditional form of a leather strap to the hand. Fortunately very few punishments are handed out, probably less than 50 a year. I myself live in a province which banned it over 30 years ago, and must say that teachers have devised punishments worse than bruising. One glaring example is when Mr. Penner made a certain student put on gloves and clean mouse shit out of some bag of his. Corporal punishment cannot have any positive impacts, teaching a child not to do something by beating on him, come on. That's like killing a killer to show killing is wrong. Let us enter the new millenium and end this disgrace

Comments: I am deeply appauled there still adults out there in this time that would commit crimes like these against the children of America esp with all the facts and simple common sense of the danger, harm, and image it teaches that it's okay to hurt another person, esp a child. Many of these "educators" are also playing out a past traumatic exposure to this abuse themselves and are sick people that need help. Some of them do foster the lust and desire to do practices like this to children that is deeply rooted in sexual perversion. That is a crime. A crime that needs to be punished as well as banned.

Comments: I have a five year old son. I STRONGLY oppose the use of corporal punishment to the point where i will home school him before i send him into an enviornment that allows spanking or any physical punishment. I do NOT want to deprive my son all the benefits of a public education and socialization. Please don't make me choose too. Thank you. Elizabeth Read

Comments: This is the south's legacy from slavery. see www.nopaddle.com that traces the southerners' history of abuse. Maybe the southerners are proud of their slavery heritage. But I am proud of my heritage too- of burning the south!

Thanks for your efforts. Please call me to share resource ideas and contacts. Kim Holt of WSOC-tv is working on a show about this in the surrounding areas. We need all the help we can organize. Comments: I am appalled and dismayed that this barbarism is still in existence. It is no wonder South Carolina Schools underperform nationally, when we teach violence, a complete inability to deal with issues without resorting to violence, and subject the weakest links of our society to being beaten with a board rather than actually teaching them.

Comments: Ridiculous in this day and age. Is this the only way to teach the children, by corporal punishment!, Says A LOT about the school system and it's teachers! No patience, No tolerance, No endurance, and No imagination! This is just teaching children how to become angry and very sad and isolated HUMAN beings. Get with it South Carolina, would you like someone that's MUCH bigger than you to hit YOU I'm sure not, even that's called assault anywhere!

Comments: I'm trying to find some legal help right now. My child was paddled by the principal who very smugly told me that she didn't have to have my permission to do so. I have no way of documenting any marks or bruises because she waited until November 1, 2006 to mail me about the incident..which occured on October 12th 2006.

Comments: I came upon this while searching Google for corporal punishment in NYS. I just today spoke to Child Protective Services regarding a daycare provider who spanked my child repeatedly with a wooden spoon. This was the first I knew of that NYS does not have a law against CP. I am with you! It needs to stop in every state!

Comments: Children are the most vulnerable individuals in our society and they must be protected against harm to their moral, emotional, and physical wellbeing. Corporal punishment equals violence and degradation and children must be protected from it. This protection must be enforced in ALL environments and circumstances, and especially when children are under the influence and power of someone of authority to them (e.g. school and kindergarten teachers, parents, and other family members). Please help to end violence against children.
