We are writing to you as residents of the Coronation Estate to express our disagreement regarding the proposal to remove the Coronation Estate from the exsisting South Ward and to include it in the new suggested Uphill Ward. As residents of the Coronation estate we feel that we belong as part of the South Ward along with our neighbouring Oldmixon and Bournville Housing estates. We believe that we are very much part of the South Ward community and we have strong social and community values inside the ward that we share with the Bournville and Oldmixon estates. Our children attend schools that are located on the Bournville, most of us attend the doctors surgery at the Healthy Living Centre and use the facilities there. The Bournville offers the Coronation Estate a wealth of services such as the housing office, credit union and the One Stop Skills and Job Centre. There are opportunities for us to learn new skills, get help, support and advice. A great majority of us are in social housing and are low income families and we feel that the support we get from belonging to this ward is a long standing and important part of our community. Being part of South Ward often has benefits to us such as being able to access grants and awards in order for us to put on events such as Neighbours Day, Play Day events for children, summer and winter fetes and chances for us to all get together as a community, the Bournville, Oldmixon and Coronation all coming together to enjoy happy times. We pride ourselves on community cohesion and we have worked hard to achieve this over the past years. We strongly oppose becoming part of the Uphill ward as we do not feel in any way that this would be good for our community. We are at least a quarter of a mile from Uphill, separated by an extremely busy road. Uphill does not have any of the facilities that we use on a day to day basis. Their school is extremely small and can not accommodate our children. There is no doctors surgery there and there is also no bus service from our estate to Uphill. Our children go to play on the Bournville and the Oldmixon as these are within easy walking distance and they do not go to Uphill to play. We do not feel that we belong as part of Uphill and we feel that the residents of Uphill would not welcome the proposed change either. Our children’s family and friends live on the Bournville and Coronation estates and we whole-heartedly would not want to be removed from South Ward, we have a tight support network within our South Ward community. A huge number of us live in social housing; the Coronation estate is a former council estate. Our housing office, credit union, councilor surgeries and services all within our South Ward community and within easy walking distance. We also include with our letter a petition of signatures from some of our fellow residents from the Coronation to express our dissatisfaction with this proposed change. We urge you to reject this proposal as we do not want to become part of the Uphill ward, we strongly oppose it.
