We, the undersigned, call upon the elected officials of the United States political arena to swear upon the Constitution of the United States when taking the oath of office. Many American Presidents have sworn an oath on a holy book, but that is a personal choice the individual has made. For many other federally elected officials, it has become nothing more than a photo opportunity that will be shared by questionable, watered-down media. The fact is, the official oaths of Congress are administered with no holy book in sight. Members do swear to uphold the Constitution, but never on the document itself or even a copy of it. It is time for these official oaths and these photo opportunities to mean much more than reciting a few words or smiling for the camera. The Constitution itself would never require this of us, would never hold it against us if we didn't, and would even celebrate our right to disagree with the idea. Yet this is what makes it the perfect document which any elected official could lay their hand upon, swear to uphold, and pledge loyalty to.
