Hello,"conscies2014" is an interactive online memorial to the Conscientious Objectors of ALL nations, tribes and creeds. But (at this moment in time): Especially those who refused fight and kill each other in the Great War of 1914 - 1918.

2014 is the one hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of the Great War. During which the slaughter was on an industrial scale. To save themselves: Governments sought to mobilise their male populations to stand between them and their enemies. In the UK this simply involved creating another LAW. This introduced conscription. A means by which the government could compel it's electorate to go to war. Kill - and be killed.

However, not everyone was prepared to fight and kill their brothers. Many humanitarians (religious and secular) refused to obey, fight and kill. These men of principle were known (amongst other things) as Conscientious Objectors or "conscies". During the Great War some "conscies" were politically active and compiled and signed petitions denouncing the madness of WAR.... "conscies2014" is such a petition. Signaturies can be anyone who refuses to kill a fellow Human Being because the Law says he (or she) must do so  - or face prosecution. It is a salute to Conscientious Objectors from all around our world - and throughout history. But, especially (at this time) to the conscies of the Great War.
