Name: Carolyn Wilkins on Dec 4, 2007Comments: Giving parents choice -- offering a meaningful half-day program in the face of (questionably motivated) cries for all-day K -- ensures this decision is really about providing what is best for ALL our children. Having recently seen what the kindergarten curriculum is about, I find the idea of "stretching" that content across 9 more hours (or more) each week crazy. If others want it for their children, I support them in their pursuit. However, I would hope that they would be as respectful of other parents' call to not only decline to participate, but to receive meaningful support from school faculty, administrators and families. Is this separate classrooms for half- and full-day kids Curriculum that's geared toward the morning session to ensure all students meet educational goals Respect. Inclusion. Doing right by our children.Flag

Name: Wanda Gleason on Dec 5, 2007Comments: Half-day kindergarten has been wonderful for so many of Concord's kindergarteners. I feel it is right for my child, yet I respect that other parents may feel differently about their own children. Concord can and should have a kindergarten program that fulfills the needs of all our kindergarteners.Flag

Name: Ann M. Bailey on Dec 6, 2007Comments: At a time of "tight budgets," required full-day kindergarten for all of Concord's children is not the way that I wish my school tax monies to be used. Parents need choices. Not all children benefit from such programs. The educational value for Concord students has not been clearly established.Flag

Name: Allison Larew on Dec 6, 2007Comments: My preference would be to emulate the Carlisle model of 3 half days, 2 full days. A full day schedule, while providing a needed service for the community, is not in the best academic interest of my children. Five full days is too long, they would be too exhausted, and any learning edge they receive would be canceled out by the stress of being in school for such a long day. I will send my youngest to a private kindergarten to avoid that outcome. I am incensed that the school committee would vote for this with out reaching out to parents first. They are providing a service, not an education, and they are in the education business.Flag
