Petition Summary Community Broadcasting has a special place in Australia's media sector. It’s radio and TV based on community participation and control and world-renowned for its innovation and reach. While Community Broadcasting has grown to meet demand and the challenges of media convergence, government support has declined in real terms. As a result, there is a cumulative funding gap for both operational and capital expenditure. In the 2007 Federal Election, none of the major political parties announced a media policy. We won’t let that stand in this election. The Community Broadcasting sector is seeking additional $25 million in Government support in 2010/11 in the following areas: • CONTENT: $7 million Funding to restore declining Government support levels for ethnic, Indigenous and print handicapped content production. • TRAINING: $2 million In 2008 only one third of community radio stations were able to participate in accredited training programs. •INFRASTRUCTURE: $4 million Capital development is critically needed to ensure the ongoing capacity of community broadcasting stations. • CO-ORDINATION: $12 million Operational support is required at both station and sector levels for effective planning and co-ordination for digital transmission, production and distribution. Please show your support by signing your name below and tell us which community broadcasting station you and your community can’t go without! Petition Declaration We, the undersigned are concerned citizens who seek: - Your support for the Vision 2015 Proposal to transform community broadcasting – an essential investment for a diverse and vibrant Australian media - Adoption and release of a community broadcasting policy with funding commitments prior to the Federal Election.
