As individuals and families, we have overcome, and continue to overcome the challenges that resulted from Hurricane Sandy. As a community, we united together to rebuild and strengthen our Merrick. Most recently, I have noticed that our community mailbox has been removed. Upon speaking with the local post office, I was informed that the mailbox (located on Beach Drive) had been removed after the storm. I believe it was removed long before the storm actually. The postal worker I spoke with was very supportive and kind. He explained that the postal workers conducted a survey of all mailbox locations around various communities and noticed that this one seemed to be underused. He continued to explain that postal workers are here to serve communities and make things better for us. If we want a mailbox replaced in our community, he said we need to unite into one powerful voice. By signing this petition, we are showing that we need a mailbox in our community. I, for one will hold onto mail for days before mailing it. I can't always drive to a more distant mailbox with my baby in my car. I would never feel it's safe to leave him in the car while I run out to drop the mail off. I also don't think leaving all our mail in our own mailboxes is a good idea for the postal workers; it becomes too much. In an age where many of us do online bill-pay, we may not have an urgent need for a mailbox, but if you feel we could benefit from having one, please sign to unite our community into one voice. Thank you!
