Comments: I have taught Ecology and Ornithology for 15 years for CCE. My students have represented all adult ages and backgrounds. Some have gone on to achieve great things. The courses were good for them, me and Sussex (University and County) I would like to see CCE continue.

Comments: This closure is terrible news. Michael Farthing's article in the Independent awhile back waxed lyrical about the University and local community involvement. There is nothing closer to the local community than CCE. The economic climate may be difficult, but surely any future developments at Sussex must not be at the expense of the local community which has supported (through CCE courses) the university for many years. Adult education is vitally important to any community but obviously not to the university.

Comments: It seems to be very short sighted to close a department which offers a second chance for people to train and obtain new qualifications at a time when so many people are losing their jobs and needing to gain new skills. The CCE has recruited very high calibre students who have gone on to work in new fields including archaeology and creative writing. The demand for these courses is very high and unfortunately many students who have asked to do an MA or a DPHIL in Archaeology recently have had to be turned down because of the university's decision to close the department.

Comments: I completely agree with all of the above. A university which cuts itself off from the local community needs to think very carefully before so doing.

Comments: When I left school I was not interested in higher education, but overtime I realised that I wanted to learn more. Accessing my degree at CCE enabled me to fulfill an ambition that I had held for 30 years and the loss of such an excellent teaching facility would be a tragedy for others in the same position as me who want to learn.

Comments: CCE plays an important role both in terms of the University and the wider community. At a time when branching out and rebuilding societies and communities is important - and potentially financially beneficial - scaling back community engagement is ludicrous and short-sighted.

Comments: Surrey no longer has extra-mural courses so if Sussex stops providing them a large part of the South East will be without any provision. Archaeology in particular has always relied on volunteers, and it would be a great loss if people no longer had access to courses which provide knowledge, skills and enjoyable activites.

Comments: At a time when many universities have cut adult and continuing education opportunities, Sussex has been a notable exception - to cut these now would be an immense loss, both to potential students and to the university itself. I feel particularly strongly about the loss of archaeology, a field which many only enter in adult life and for which Sussex has made exceptional provision

Comments: From personal and current experience as a 'second chance' adult learner, I have only been able to access a degree due to the existence of CCE. The archaeology department is excellent - the prospect that the wonderful courses they offer would be no more is a tragedy for archaeology in Sussex. The projects that have been produced by students from this department of dedicated and professional staff have been of an extremely high standard. The University of Sussex should be very proud of the innovative projects and great successes achieved in archaeology - and indeed across CCE as a whole - and look to ways of continuing to provide these popular learning opportunities for local adults in the community.

Comments: It would be a great shame if the CCE closes its doors, I have personally and professionally benefitted from attending the foundation degree in community development course. Unfortunatley there are very few avenues for adult learners to engage with this type of course and I would urge the universtiy to explore all avenues before making this short-sighted decision.

Comments: Looks like another attempt to use wheel out the 'current economic environment' excuse to off-load a good initiative which doesn't put the right number in the Excel spreadsheet for the bean-counters. Bad for the community, bad for the students, bad for the institution.
