Name: John Smith on Nov 5, 2009Comments: I find it ridiculous that the arts council do not recognise comedy as an art form, I would like to understand how they define art and based on that then understand how comedy does not fit into this definition when theatre, poetry and music all seem to fit into it. Surely comedy is amongst the most inclusive of arts and can help create an audience for other arts as people coming to watch live comedy are much more likely to try other live performances / experiences.Flag

Name: Jonathan Stanley on Feb 5, 2010Comments: If Comedy isn't an art form, why are comedians, asked to introduce bands at gigs, why do they perform? Why do they host radio shows, sit on panel TV Shows, like the Wright Stuff and This Morning, and a human AND humourous side to our experience of life in this world? It is nothing less than snobbery not to fund comedy as an art. Yet we all acknowledge that comedy is one of the hardest arts to perform, and especially to succeed in.Flag

Name: Rachel Jackson on Jun 11, 2010Comments: Doing my dissertation on this. It's funny that it's not considered an art form yet on the other hand a play that's been rewritten a thousand times is. 'New Writing' gets all the money, but it seems that they rarely award it to people writing on their own, only people writing 'collaboratively'. The industry does not just prop itself off, many comedians aren't given a chance because they simply can not fund themselves.Flag
