After the invasion of Iraq thousands of troops were put into a situation that no one knew what was going to happen, how long it was going to last and what effect it was going to have on each of them as an individual.

Here we are almost 5 years later and we have thousands of men and women returning home with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Some of these service members are now veterans and are back home with their families, but we have an ever growing number of soldiers that have been diagnosed with PTSD that are being put back into combat. This is not just a safety issue for everyone, but it is also absolutely wrong for the soldier who is ill. How can you expect someone who has already been traumatized by what he or she has experienced over there to go back into the same situation and deal with it, absorb it, and move on? All this is doing is piling more of the things that have damaged them in the beginning on top of the things they are experiencing now and adding to it. You are creating the problem and turning a blind eye to it.

There are soldiers that have asked for help, they have went to their command and they have explained what is going on, and all they get is there is nothing wrong with them. They go through psych get a few sessions, then it is good to go. Command pulls them in every couple weeks because they are “High Risk” but they are still being sent to the battle fields. They are placed on medications for PTSD, but they are called deployable meds.

This is where I ask you, is this soldier you want to serve beside? Do you want your life in his hands? Well this is what is being sent and I say it is time to stop, it is time to evaluate the situation and take action to insure our children are safe. All of our children serving.
You see I am the mother of a soldier with PTSD who is getting ready to be deployed back on his 3rd deployment and I am worried for his safety and all of the others who serve with him. I have witnessed first hand what happens when he is not in control and has a “Flashback” and if he is over there when one of these happens, I am not sure what anyone can or will be able to do.

To the Army the soldiers are boots on the ground, they are a number and a body to be counted. Well they are our children, and when you are finished with them we are the ones who are left to put the pieces back together. Every call I have made I get told the same thing, ma’am he is a soldier and an grown man, there is nothing we can do for you, you are just his mom, but the tables would be turned if you were bringing him home to me in a casket with the flag, you all would be lining up with your apologies and asking what you could do to help me. Well do it now before this happens, help me now before my son or another son becomes another statistic of war a “non combat related death” as you call them.

What more do we mothers or families have to do before someone will listen to us and save our children.

My name is Merinda Mullins, I am the mother of a 22 year old soldier who has served two tours in Iraq and is getting ready to deploy for his third tour. By the time this petition is completed my son may well be back in combat or God forbid worse then that due to the lack of treatment and compassion the Army has for soldiers diagnosed with PTSD.

With in 30 years it is estimated that there will be 300,000 cases of PTSD from the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
