Our future students and citizens of America are in desperate need of additional qualified counseling staff. College counselors are trained professionals who work with college students to promote emotional health and wellness during their college years. Although credentials, training, and education can differ among professionals, college counselors have one main objective: to help the students whom they serve (American Counseling Association, 2009). However, without this grant, students are not receiving adequate support. Students are faced with numerous emotional crises such as depression, suicide, rape, drug abuse, alcoholism, prejudice, discrimination, et cetera. There are not enough resources available on campus to work with all the students, and those who are worked on are generally reached after the crises had occurred. Programs need funding to prevent such crises. S. 682, the Mental Health on Campus Improvement Act, will see to it that our future citizens not only obtain an education but also are also mentally healthy.
