I have got to the end of my tether, so I have to take action…
I’m a Network Technician at a college. I work in an office with five to seven other people, and two of us are heavy coffee drinkers. Last summer, I bought a coffee machine for the office - paid for out of my own pocket as something to make our lives a bit nicer, and stop us both from having to pay £1 a cup for coffee from the campus shop. It’s also nice when we have people come over from the other campus, as we can now offer them a decent cup of coffee. The other main user of the machine is one of the Network Team Leaders, and will henceforth be referred to (for reasons that will soon become evident) as “The Mooch”.
Things started off reasonably well with us both taking turns to buy the coffee and clean the machine. I tended to do it slightly more often, as The Mooch often has to visit the other campus, and is tied up in meetings more than I am. I didn’t have a problem with this at first - but then it started to escalate.
Months down the line, I’m now in a situation where The Mooch hasn’t cleaned the machine this side of New Year, and hasn’t bought any of the coffee for even longer. I’ve tried asking him, reasoning with him, leaving it dirty (out of principle) for weeks at a time - I’ve even tried guilt-tripping him into it - but nothing seems to be working any more. No matter what I do - he continues to drink the coffee that I’m paying for, making, and maintaining the facilities for - but refusing to contribute at all.
I don’t want to have to take the coffee machine home, as that would affect us all, but at the same time I’m tired of doing all of the work for 50% of the coffee - while he ends up getting it absolutely free. All I ask is that he cleans the thing once in a while. I’m not even asking that he pays for the coffee, or that he cleans the machine the exact same number of times that I do - just that he makes a semi-regular contribution as a token of appreciation for the coffee he’s drinking.
