On February 17, 2009, President Obama signed an economic stimulus package that was intended to get our economy back on track and help Americans who are suffering through these difficult times. A provision in the stimulus package reduces Cobra premiums by 65% for those who lost their jobs after the arbitrary date of September 1, 2008. This subsidy only lasts for 9 months - a full nine months short of the time needed to become eligible for most states high risk insurance pools. Millions of Americans who lost their jobs prior to September 1, 2008 could not afford Cobra. Millions more elected Cobra but have now depleted their resources and can not continue on. Still millions more with pre-existing conditions who rely on cobra to bridge the 18 month gap between their former employers insurance and their state's high risk insurance pools are struggling to pay their premiums every month to prevent being locked out of insurance permanently. With each passing day, the situation grows worse. Please join us in asking Congress and the Obama administration to eliminate the arbitrary September 1, 2008 cut-off date and 9 month limitation of assistance by signing this petition and telling your friends about our efforts. Emel & Troy Breiland
We just hit 1,000 signatures. Congress and the Obama administration are still ignoring the millions of workers left behind by their arbitrary cutoff dates, but they cannot ignore a thousand of us demanding real reform.

Congress is ignoring thousands of families while they hide behind these arbitrary cut-off dates. We are pushing toward one thousand signatures so blast this link to everyone you know right now and force them to pay attention to this disaster.

The momentum behind this petition is undeniable and clearly shows that people are fed up with these arbitrary deadlines. Congress and the administration cannot ignore this growing tide of anger while families are being locked out of essential healthcare.

Lost my job in July 08 and got absolutely nothing. This is so unfair to all of us who were let go just a few weeks early.

Cobra is way too expensive as it is. 65% off is great but not when they leave so many people out in the cold. Change the date!!!

my husband has a pre-existing condition and we are terrified of losing coverage. 9 months just isnt enough time to find a new job in this economy.

TOTAL JOKE. Why pick a date at all? Either help everyone or dont help anyone. This just creates more problems for families already struggling to pay rent.
