New SMART ID Cards are being issued to all CMU students next year as part of CMU's ID initiative. Three submissions were chosen as possible designs for the face of the new ID this coming year. After viewing the submissions, I believe that the designs are atrocious and are an insult to the creative and intellectual caliber of our school. It is implausible to me that CMU, with our amazing Arts and Design schools, could produce such low-quality ID card designs. Frankly, I would be embarrassed showing any of these designs to anyone as a representation of our school. I know that I do not stand alone in this thought. I have talked to many peers from many different schools and majors and all of them had said that they would rather keep the current ID design rather than have any of the three new ones (and none of them are really fond of the current one, either!). Unfortunately, due to changes in the university's licencing policy, we cannot keep the current design next year. I have exchanged emails with the CMU Smart Cards panel, and they have made it clear to me that one of these three designs must be on next year's ID card. It would be a shame if the majority of CMU's students and faculty received their new SMART IDs next year and hated the design. It would be a shame if members of CMU's community were embarrassed to show their ID cards to the world because of a poor design. It would be a shame if we were left with a design that a majority of us doesn't like, even though we could have changed it. That is why I am making this petition. We have the ability to choose an ID that we like, not just tolerate. We have the right to an ID we would feel proud to show to the world. We have the right to pick the best, not the least worse. Would I want to have any of these designs show me who I am? Would I feel proud carrying any of these IDs around in my pocket? If you answered no to any or all of these, sign this petition.
