If a New Zealander was not in Australia on a specific date in 2001 he/she can no longer get Australian Permanent Residency; benefits other than those paid for by NZ; a Hex Loan; the ability to enrol to vote; the right to vote or stand for elective office.
Australians who choose to reside in New Zealand are entitled to all such rights.
When the NZ Prime Minister recently met with Australian PM Tony Abott he sought to commence discussions to remedy these inequities. PM Abott publically brushed off the request and simply stated that such matters were not up for discussion. (A somewhat arrogance from a man whose party would probably be the major political beneficiary of the suggested correction as those who have thhe intestinal fortitude to migrate are more likely to be supporters of the LNP)
As I see it the Australians have two (2) choices:
1. Correct the current inequity and continue to treat NZ'rs with Class 444 and 461 Temporary Residence Visa as second-class citizens
or
2. Expect that New Zealanders will retaliate by insisting that their Government REMOVE the benefits accorded to Australians so that both countries treat each other's citizens equally.
