Comments: i am bipolar, and been so for a long time. i was not diagnosed till less than a year ago. i was always treated like i was crazy, by family, friends and others. it is not easy to be happy when you are not understood, which makes my depression worse. i would love to see more education and awareness about mental health.

Comments: It's 2007 and proper services for mental health issues, are still not in place. More programs for individual illnesses need to be started in more communites. (ie. day programs for eating disorders and programs for PTSD/trauma issues) You cannot expect a person to get better in a program , if it is only once a week, or doesn't even exist. More psychiatric units need to also be put in place with compassionate caregivers. Not just one in a large city, for everyone, but more individualized units for different mental illnesses.

Comments: I and many people I know need psychotherapy which was paid for by the government up until 6 or 7 years ago. Social workers can be helpful but they are not psychiatrists. Especially in the case of women because they have no way now to address their past issues are more than ever landing up in abusive situations and because of the reduced welfare and frozen minimum wages set by harris, the tuna for brains morone, we are stuck with no future. Many years ago their was a cuts to womens shelters and mental health institutions were closed, around 1997 I think. The governmnet sits back on fat salaries and fat retirement income. They take more away each year from us and when we ask for the programs back they say they can't afford it. Yet, there is surplus everywhere enough to send over seas in foreign aid, allow more imigrants into the country and rack our other income tax in EI insurance which no one can get when they need it. The government has become a bussiness, a corporation and we have allowed it to happen, preferring to point the finger at our neighbor because they might have gotten a free bag of groceries or bought a case of beer while claiming to be poor because they need some kind of escape from their cronically miserable lives. We only have one life to live. Please help us to live it with dignity and a spark of hope.

Comments: There needs to be more public awareness of mental health. Funding needs to be placed in this area where it is desperately needed. Mental health promotion and prevention work with children and youth would be an upstream approach to treating mental health challenges. I eagerly await the next Mental Health Plan and hope that it can create a vision for change whereby people with mental health challenges receive timely interventions and mental health challenges can be prevented or identified early in multiple setting including schools, child care centres, and doctor's offices. It is time to take action.

Comments: As someone with mental health issues I see the lack of help that really is out there. As someone who speaks out professionally on these issues, I have to encourage other young adults to seek help that simply is not there. Most mental illness becomes prominent between 16 and 21, which is precisely the age gap where people are no longer on the youth side, but also not yet adults. There is no peer group of support even if they manage to get on one side or the other. Something needs to change.
