The movement in Chile has achieved the recognition of education as a fundamental right that we long aimed to support. This success belongs to the students and teachers who persisted despite the immense challenges they faced. We will keep watching how these structural changes take shape in the coming months.
Public Declaration in Support of the Chilean Movement in Defense of Public Education
As students, faculty, staff and alumni of the University of California (UC), the California State University (CSU), and the California Community Colleges (CCC) systems, we want to publicly express our support to the current Chilean social movement in the fight towards the defense of public education. We endorse their struggle in search of educational reforms that seeks to promote deep structural changes in Chilean society, aiming to break with the historical social injustice and inequity that has prevailed in the country since the birth of the Chilean Neo-liberal model imposed by Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship in the '70s.
In the last weeks we have witnessed through international media the violence and repression exercised against protesters during students' and teachers' protests, and we want to express our opposition to any measure that attempts to diminish or threaten freedom of expression in Chile, and the physical integrity of its citizens.
We believe that education is a social right, and should not be a privilege. We express through this letter our solidarity with the Chilean educational movement led by students and teachers, in the search of equal access to education of quality for all Chileans.
Education is a right, not a luxury for the rich. Watching what is happening in Chile is heartbreaking. Stay strong!

Unbelievable that students are being treated like criminals for wanting a better future. Sending so much love to everyone in the streets.

The repression is totally out of line. Chile needs to listen to the people.
