We are petitioning to get Mrs. Alston’s name cleared after 3TV aired a biased and untrue story about this wonderful teacher. Mrs. Alston has made incredible contributions to her community serving as both the sponsor for Black Student Union as well as Senior Class Council. Through BSU she helps organize a Black History Month celebration and encourages members to give back and help their communities. The situation that they spoke of was taking completely out of context and now Mrs. Alston’s reputation has suffered greatly. Students in this class were given a letter home at the beginning of the school year asking to have their parents sign and acknowledge that the students would be able participants in mature or controversial themes, which every student was also required to sign. Mrs. Alston does not discriminate against anyone, and has NEVER and will NEVER allow racial slurs to be thrown around her classes, actively speaks against anyone who tries. The incident that that 3TV chose to report inaccurately on was an in class exercise that shows the impact of these words which are thrown around carelessly. She strictly states before the exercise that these words, which are heard every day in the halls, classrooms, and meeting places used by students, are not acceptable. The point is to teach and understand diversity and tolerance. It is unfortunate that they are trying to make an example out of a truly wonderful person. Please sign this petition to have 3TV have a follow up story on the amazing person that Mrs. Alston is and what actually happened in this class.
