We, the undersigned, note that the University of Nottingham and the Students' Union invest in companies that are directly involved in, or benefit financially from the arms trade. This is often without the knowledge of students, staff and beneficiaries.
We are pleased with the progress made in passing an ethical investment motion at student union council. We believe that the following measures should be put in place in order to minimise the harm that the arms trade does:
- Both the University and the Student’s Union should institute an Ethical Investment Policy.
- Both the University and the Student’s Union should maintain transparency over their investments (as required under the Freedom of Information Act).
- The Centre for Career Development should not promote careers in the arms trade, and should actively promote ethical careers. This should include an ethical careers fair.
- The Student’s Union and its societies should not be involved with arms companies,
We believe this is necessary to prevent unethical investment in the arms trade. |
