Faculty/Staff Petition for Enforcement of Smoke-Free Areas at AU The AU student handbook states: “it is the policy of the university to achieve an environment as close to smoke-free as practically possible.” But not even the Smoke-Free Areas are Smoke-Free!!! The signs declaring “Smoke Free Areas” in front of the Mary Graydon Center, dormitories, and other university buildings mean nothing if they are not enforced. Currently, the university considers these areas “courtesy zones” that should be peer enforced. Peer enforcement has not been effective at curbing smoking within these smoke-free areas. On Feb 17, 207 cigarette butts were collected within the Smoke-Free Area on the Mary Graydon patio. When smokers ignore the signs, they not only deny the rights of non-smokers to breathe clean air within the Smoke Free Areas, but they undermine the integrity of the University Administration. Your signature means you call on the University to enforce the Smoke Free Areas (25 feet from a building entrance) with threat of a ticket issued by Public Safety, in the same way that open containers of alcohol are enforced.
