We love The Office. From the beginning, we were drawn in by the subtlety of the show, and the careful attention paid to each character, together creating a strong sense of realism. We laughed when Michael rushed into Chili's, dressed happily as Eminem to award the employees in The Dundies, and we cried when an equally teary Jim confessed his love to Pam in Casino Night. This show has always been more than a show for us---it's been real and unique and something we all want to see (and have seen) succeed. We're concerned that the show we've loved since day one, when the ratings were low and no one understood the true greatness playing across their TV screens, may be losing some of the subtlety and realism we so adore. We miss those 'glory days', when Pam was dreaming of an artistic life outside the walls of a small town paper company, and Dwight was a lovable dork who just wanted to get home in time for Battlestar Galactica. We don't want the show, with it's growing success and new audience members, to lose what made it so special in the beginning. We don't want to see the characters we've come to know and love, become mere caricatures of their former selves. We don't want to see Jim lose his sense of humor---sure, he has priorities, but he also recently married the love of his life and is expecting a baby! They should be thrilled! We don't want to see Phyllis lose her sweetness or Angela lose her familiar (and somehow lovable!) uptight nature. We want to see them as we've always seen them. Sure, they have to grow. But we want Pam to be assertive and confident, not rude and arrogant. We want Dwight to be silly, but realistic. We want subtlety. As the show hits the middle of its sixth season, we ask that the wonderful writers, cast, and crew of The Office, reflect upon what made the show so amazing in the beginning, and please, keep those classic moments and familiar characters and stories prevalent along with the inevitable changes that come from a long-running hit TV show. Keep our classic Office, please.
