Midland City Police need new training on deescalating situations, especially involving those who are emotionally or intellectually disabled. Rather than diffusing situations, many officers take a threatening stance and escalate into violent "takedowns". The ACLU supports retraining in every state. Pennsylvania's governor recently approved funding for retraining. The Americans with Disabilities Act states that individuals with mental illness or intellectual illnesses such as autism should not be treated as violent criminals even if they are acting out violently. Midland's Chief of Police needs to step up before someone is seriously injured. PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION!
In the case of my two daughters I have seen this happen two many times. I am asking for change in the way mentelly I'll people are handled. The police used to be approachable, someone to run to not away from. My daughters have been manhandled and thrown to the ground, leaving bruises and neck and back injuries that are permenant. I feel my daughters who are emotionally and mentally challenged have been so beaten up by 4or more officers at a time is so very disturbing to me. I pray for change.
