The government has finally shelved the proposal for good. It has been a long and draining fight but our refusal to accept this discrimination worked. Keep your eyes open to ensure they do not try to bring this back under a different mask.

"Citoyens Contre la Nouvelle Charte des Valeurs" Citizens Against the New Charter of Values"

Le gouvernement du Parti québécois prévoit d'interdire le port des vêtements ou symboles religieux tels que kippa, Hijab/foulard islamique, turban, et crucifix par les employés du secteur public. Ceci inclurait l’administration publique, les hôpitaux, tribunaux, garderies pour enfants, et tout autre établissement d'enseignement financé par le gouvernement.
La charte qui sera proposée ne respecte pas les fondements de la Charte canadienne des droits et libertés et va plutôt inciter à la discrimination. Le Parti québécois pourrait avoir le soutien politique nécessaire pour adopter cette loi dès la reprise des travaux de l'Assemblée nationale.
Ce n'est pas le rôle d'un gouvernement d'imposer des règles qui limitent notre liberté d'expression et nos libertés de croyance. Nous ne devrions pas être contraints de faire un choix entre nos valeurs personnelles et morales et le choix d’un travail. Nous n'avons pas besoin d'une charte pour légiférer sur nos libertés de croyance et faire diversion aux problèmes économiques et sociaux plus urgents pour des fins purement électorales.
Nous devons agir rapidement en tant que citoyens responsables pour promouvoir le respect et la tolérance dans notre société.

The Parti Québécois government plans to ban wearing any identifying religious apparel and symbols such as kippahs, Hijab/islamic headscarves, turbans, and crucifixes by public-sector workers. This includes government offices, hospitals, courts, daycares, and any other government-funded educational institution.The proposed charter violates the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and will incite to discrimination. The Parti Québécois may have the political support necessary to pass this legislation into law when the National Assembly resumes sitting.
It is not the role of a government to impose rules that restrict freedom of expression and freedom of belief. We should not face the dilemma to make a choice between our own personal and moral values and our “jobs”. We don’t need a charter to legislate our values and freedom of belief and divert attention from more urgent economic and social problems for electoral purposes.
We should act quickly as responsible citizen to protect our rights and promote respect and tolerance in our society.

The feedback I receive lately is heavy with real anxiety about how this proposal forces people to choose between their faith and their livelihoods. I am spending my time documenting these personal accounts because the government acts as if this is just a policy debate rather than a disruption of lives. It is exhausting work to keep pushing against this wall of silence but I am not stopping.

We hit one hundred signatures today. It feels like a long road ahead but seeing people stand up against this proposal makes the exhaustion feel worth it.

The work ahead feels heavy and the opposition is not going to make it easy for us. We are approaching our first milestone and I need you to push this forward because the silence from the government is deafening.

Cette charte divise les gens pour absolument rien. Arretez de jouer avec nos droits.
ca va juste creer de la frustration inutile partout. tres mauvaise idée.
Ridicule. On est en 2013 pas en 1950. Occupez-vous de l'économie à la place.
CE N EST PAS LE QUEBEC QUE JE CONNAIS. La peur ne devrait jamais dicter nos lois.
C'est une honte pour notre province de vouloir exclure les gens comme ca. Je suis contre a 100%.

I have more than 250 years of English (Irish, British), French, and Aboriginal ancestry in Quebec. In the 1970's, when so many fled to Ontario, my parents stayed to try and make Quebec a better place and now it's my turn. I refuse to be made to feel an outsider in my own province, and made to feel that I can't be a Canadian without forsaking Quebec. I refuse to accept the values of the fearful and the narrowminded as my own, or to believe that these are the values of Quebec. The politics of fear and oppression have never served the public interest and they never will. These are not my values, I am Québécoisnadian.
