Comments: I agree wholeheartedly. A whole cohort of well trained, productive researchers are at risk of being unable to do their work which represents a major loss in the investment made to train them. Unlike the United States, Canada does not have a large enough system of alternative support for investigator initiated research.

Comments: I have just come back from one CIHR committee evaluation. Most likely, the cutoff on this committee will be around 4.4.....

Comments: Idea-driven research is a laborious individual journey and it is only 10-20 years later that it become a field of research. That is to be contrasted with technology-driven research which is a "field" from the onset but, if it regularly generates neat phenomenological findings, it will very seldom generate new ideas. That is similar in medicine where we teach to students not to treat sophisticated but useless images but to treat patients in all their relevance and complexity.
