Cedarburg High School currently has a school schedule that involves having 8 courses per semester, and attending 7 of them per day. This system has been used for many years, and allows students to have enough time in each class period to effectively learn the material. However, school officials are currently proposing a new type of schedule that does not allow students to take as many classes.
They have several reasons for doing this. One of their main reasons was that they believe that math classes do not have enough time to teach their material, and as a result Cedarburg High School has lower math scores than other local schools. However, the schools they used in comparison were Nicollet and White Fish Bay, schools that are very well known for advanced math skills, and did not compare us to other schools that are relatively closer, such as Grafton and Port Washington. They also failed to acknowledge that any disadvantages in math might instead be due to other factors, such as sub-par teachers.
Many students at Cedarburg have had their courses planned out for years. By changing the schedule now, many students will be forced to drop electoral classes, such as band, choir, and other fine arts. Not only do these classes bring culture and learning into the school, but they are a source of revenue and entertainment for the school. Many parents and relatives pay to come to football games exclusively to see the Marching Band and the Dance Team. Not allowing students to participate in these activities is incredibly detrimental, both to the program and to student morale.
