| 814 | Lori Ewing-Wortz | I lost a dear friend 21 yrs ago due to someone lighting a cigarette while driving and failing to negotiate a turn in the road and hitting the car he was riding in head on. The other person in the car with him -my husband at the time -spent 30 days in Shock Trauma, and will have life long medical issues due to this accident.
The life of my friend, and the injuries sustained by my husband were worth a $25.00 fine and a ticket for inattentive driving since there were no drugs or alcohol involved. The driver of the vehicle who hit them had a broken arm. She bragged about her lack of injuries in school the next day.
I am sure she has completely forgotten the accident - why not? She got a mere tap (not even a slap) on the wrist for destroying so many lives. I have not forgotten any detail of that day for 21 years, 1 week, and 6 days. My friend would have celebrated his 41st birthday on November 2nd. His only child, a son, was 16 days old when this accident happened. Now, he is a young man who never knew his father.
Although none of this will bring back to life any of our loved ones that have been lost, there must be some form of peace given with a vehicular homicide conviction in a senseless tragedy. There is no peace for the survivors when a beautiful life is taken, and no punishment for the one who took it. God Bless this family, and all families and loved ones of those who who have passed under such tragic events. |
