Courtesy of VV Daily Press Smith, 20, of Victorville, was walking north on Balsam Road south of Nisqualli Road on Friday night at about 10:30 p.m. pushing her daughter in a stroller when she was struck from behind by a Ford pickup truck, according to Deputy Jaime Snow of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Major Accident Investigation Team. The 14-month-old was thrown from the stroller and suffered minor injuries, but Smith and her unborn child were pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. “They don’t know how they’ve affected this family,” said Joel Rose, Smith’s older brother. He called his sister Nee-Nee Nay-Nay. “We had a special bond,” Rose said with a quick smile. “She had problems sleeping and she and I would talk almost every night until 2 in the morning so she could get some sleep.” According to Rose, Smith went to the Walmart store on Bear Valley Road to get some diapers for her daughter. Due to the summer heat and her pregnancy, she tried to go out only when the temperature wasn’t as high. “The heat made her sick and that’s why she was out at that time,” Rose stated. Smith was on the phone with her fiancé when she was struck by the truck, Rose said. “He heard everything,” Rose recounted. “The screams and everything.” A woman who lived nearby and heard the crash came outside and found his sister and niece in the road, Rose said. She picked up the child before grabbing Smith’s phone. “That lady picked up the phone and talked to my sister’s boyfriend and told him what happened,” Rose stated. A few minutes later, Smith’s family was contacted and since that moment, Rose said, they have all been living in a daze. “It’s not real to me,” he said. “I can’t believe this happened and for someone to just not even stop and drive off knowing you hit someone. Who can do that?” Celebrity Chillie Mo AKA Joel Rose speaks: My sister case has been restarted this is unjustified. My family needs closure, i also feel this was a hate crime. We just want just please. So please help sign this petition. I love you all in this world God Bless.
