The public apology has finally been issued and the pressure we applied proved necessary to secure this outcome. I am drained from this process but I am glad we held them accountable for their overreach. We must remain vigilant to ensure the department respects our community rights moving forward.
The following petition is to petition Chief Eric Jolliffe of the York Regional Police Force to either resign or offer a public apology to Rabbi Mendel Kaplan and the Jewish Community of York Region.
Rabbi Kaplan's synagogue was scheduled to host a speaker, Pamela Geller, who is a political activist opposing Muslim Extremism. The York Regional Police convinced Rabbi Kaplan to cancel the event using Rabbi Kaplan's position as a volunteer Chaplain with the York Regional Police Force as a means to influence this decision.
The York Regional Police were wrong to use its position of power to force the cancellation of this event. In doing so, they have subdued the Right of Free Speech and have shown the Jewish Community that they have no understanding of how to properly "Serve and Protect" the Jewish Community of York Region. As such, the Jewish Community has lost confidence in the York Regional Police Service.
Indeed "DEEDS SPEAK".
The silence from the department remains heavy and insulting despite the clear message we have sent. I am exhausted by the constant uphill battle against their lack of accountability but I refuse to walk away from this fight for justice.

Using a volunteer position to bully someone is so low. Leave the Rabbi alone.

Eric Jolliffe needs to go. We live in Canada not a dictatorship where police tell rabbis who can speak.

ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. Why are they targeting the Jewish community? Apologize now.

Very disappointed in the YRP. Abuse of power plain and simple.

This is totally unacceptable behavior from the police. They should be protecting free speech not censoring it.
