| 51 | Alison LePage | South Portland should recognize that concerend citizens are looking for more sustainability in thier relationship to food and the planet. Let's encourage people to eat eggs out of their back yard rather than drive to the store to buy eggs that were trucked in from someplace else. What a wonderfully simple idea! |
| 52 | Michaela Cavallaro | I live at 49 Lowell St. in South Portland and am happy to support this ordinance. |

| 55 | Peter Frederick | Thanks for doing this. I just hope that the council does not regulate this to death. |

| 57 | Hope LeBlanc | We are in FULL support of backyard chickens in South Portland. We have spent lots of time with families with backyard coops in Vermont. It adds so much to the value of the homes and communities!

| 59 | Nate | First, thanks to Stacey, Neil and Olivia for leading this effort! I'm currently looking to move to SoPo and would love to be able to have hens. Good luck! |
| 60 | Elizabeth Stehle-Giroux | You go girl! And a hearty "Good Job" to the parents. I'll see you at the meeting. And lets all remember this when the next local election rolls around! |
| 61 | cara slifka | i don't see anything wrong with having chickens for egg production as long as they are contained in safe and visually appealing pens...i myself would consider housing hens for egg production and to help teach my young son the value of animal ownership and home-grown resources...

| 63 | Scott Calkin | I fully support amending the existing ordinance to allow 4-6 pet hens for personal egg production.
As an added benefit, chickens offer a measure of property pest control. They eat both deer ticks (lyme disease protection) and wood ticks as well as snails and slugs (garden vegetable and flower protection).
Respectfully submitted,

| 64 | Margaret Donahue | We were planning on getting chickens this summer and never even knew there was an ordinance in SoPo. My brother and his family have chickens in their yard in Portland, Oregon. It is a much bigger city and much more urban than SoPo. Will be there on the 25th. Thanks for your hard work! Margaret |

| 68 | Peter Stanton | It's a great idea, provided owners are responsible in how they care for the birds' health and manage their waste. You might consider regulating chicken coop proximity to streams and storm sewers which drain into Casco Bay. |

| 70 | Joan Foley | Let them have their chickens........ |
| 71 | Erin Cinelli | Please allow South Portland residents to raise chickens as pets in their backyards. It will not lower property values - if that is a concern, then my next door neighbor who has 4 sheds made of scrap metal and wood, a broken down camper van, and 3 wrecked cars on his .10 acre lot should be in violation of something! |
| 72 | Grace DRUMMOND | Given that the citizens requesting to amend the zoning ordinance request only "to allow 4-6 pet hens (NO roosters)," and plan to keep them in "well-tended garden coops{like pet rabbit hutches] [so that] they won't roam into neighbors' yards," and that this whole request really amount to a request to keep a few "non-invasive," well-contained pets - which as a bonus serves to help with the trend to conserve and eat more healthily (home-raised organic eggs) - my entire family completely supports this request to amend the zoning ordinance as outlined above. Cape Elizabeth has already made the enlightened decision to amend their Town's laws accordingly, and we urge the City Councilors of South Portland to do the same, without making anymore "mountain out of a molehill" over this simple and reasonable issue. Thank you! The Drummond and Gilman Families; 10 Ship Channel Road, South Portland, Maine. June 23, 2007. |

| 74 | Michael & Siobhan Burke | We would rather see an ordinance banning free roaming cats than one banning a few harmless (and penned!) chickens, any day. |

| 76 | Amelia and Stephen Sponseller | We support the Collins' and other South Portland families who want to raise backyard hens 100%. |

| 82 | Aprill Newman | I want to voice my strong support in favor of this amendment. It would such a positive step toward sustainable and environmentally sound living. I am not sure that my family will ever have pet chickens, but I very much hope that my neighbors will be able to! |

| 84 | Scott Hersey | We support allowing chickens in SoPo neighborhoods. |
| 85 | Heather Robinson | We have just restored a shed in our backyard in hopes of having chickens. We are avid organic gardeners and homesteaders, and we would like to raise our own eggs for our baby daughter. We'd also like to have some chicken manure -- esp for our tomato plants! We'll try to get to tonight's meeting, but 6:30 p.m. is a rough time to go out with a baby... |
