Comments: I was born and raised in Chicago. I am proud to be from Chicago, and I go there every year for a Mt. Carmel High School reunion. But if this smoking ban passes, I will no longer be proud to be from Chicago, and I will no longer return to Chicago for my annual visit. There is no credible evidence that second hand smoke is harmful.

Comments: The importance of the proposed smoking ban in Chicago goes far beyond smoking, health, or money. The question is whether Chicago will allow a few obsessed control freaks take it over with totally inaccurate information to support their argument for tyranny like in California or New York, or to set an example for the rest of the country by saying no to the ban, no to tyranny, and a big YES for freedom and sensible government which the United States of America is founded upon!

Comments: I am already disgusted with the total ban on smoking at O'hare. If this passes in Chicago I will avoid the city like the plague. Shame on leaders for forcing only their ideals on business owners.

Comments: A smoking ban means 'it will be illegal to use a legal product in 'private' businesses' Which is ludicrous and stupid It is not about health and it never was. It is all about de-normalizing smoking

Comments: I returned to Illinois after thirty-two years in California specifically due to the smoking ban out there. There are twenty million smokers in the U.S., give or take and the fact is, most of us stop going out to restuarants and bars once smoking is prohibited. I would certainly not set foot in Chicago again if this ban is implemented, despite the fact this it is my home town and I have always loved it. Are you sure want to slam the door on thousands of people just like me I assure you, I am not alone in this. I also used to own a bar. I think I know the inevitable result of this campaign. Those who claim the smoking ban in California had no impact on the bar business there are either woefully ignorant or, frankly they are lying blatantly. It will have the same impact in Chicago: people will be drinking in their homes with Food to Go. Please don't ruin what is probably the greatest city in the U.S.A!

Comments: As a Chicago native, former California resident and former bar and restaurant owner, I implore you - please don't let this smoking ban destroy the livliest, most vibrant city in the U.S.A! (Destroy may seem too strong a term: but there are reasons, Californians drive to Vegas, Reno, even Mexico for weekends, not to mention Indian casinos. They are all exempt.) It isn't true that smoking bans in California had no negative effects. If the city of Chicago bows to anti-smokers and the ban goes through, business WILL improve - in Indiana, Wisconsin, and whatever smoker-friendly suburbs still remain. Even those who think the ban had no adverse ill-effects in California, ought to keep in mind that smoking patios are very popular across the state and always far more crowded than the bars themselves. It is one thing, to smoke outdoors at 42 degrees (that's about as cold as California gets), another when it's 42 BELOW! Those who want to get away from smoke can so so, easily. Smoke free bars and eateries exist. This is not about the "smoke" at all, but rather, their attempt to foist their paranoid restrictions on society at large. Tobacco is a legal substance! I for one, would rather see the government addressing far more dangerous substances, like crystal-meth and crack cocaine.

Comments: Please keep the freedoms we have in this fine country alive in Chicago...we are adults, and more government is not the answer. The United States of America is still a "free" country, but I'm starting to have my doubts whether it will stay that way.
