Chesapeake Restoration Steps
We all know that the health of the Chesapeake Bay is draining fast. Through countless storms, agricultural runoffs, polluted waste, and deforestation, the bay's state is in critical conditions. Although there have been several legislation that have passed to monitor the bay's health, together we all can restore the bay's quality if we follow these few steps:
Schedule and attend regular cleanups along your local stream or riverVolunteering for, or even organizing, regular cleanups in your neighborhood can bring your community together and make it more beautiful for everybody! To find a cleanup near you, contact your local watershed organization.
Replace paved driveways and sidewalks with permeable paversPermeable surfaces, such as pavers, allow stormwater to slowly soak into the ground, reducing flooding and polluted runoff. Check with your local landscaping company; most offer porous paver options.
Use natural cleaning productsChoosing a naturally based cleaner will lessen any potential risks to your health and our waterways. You can even make your own cleaning products
Ride your bike more and use your car lessBike riding saves money and helps prevent pollution from vehicle exhaust from entering the Bay and its rivers. In some parts of the Bay region, like Baltimore and Washington, it may actually be quicker and more enjoyable to bike ride than to sit in traffic each day.
Every action we take on the land affects our local streams and rivers, and ultimately the Bay, so it's up to us to take the correct actions. So instead of letting the government take its time with the cleanup, let us start acting now.
