We risked our lives, and our families, to rescue many of our Brothers and Sisters from the "Trail of tears". I would like to join in the culture and rituals of my ancestors. I dislike that the Cherokee Nation has removed the freedman from their roles. Although I am not African American, I recognize their association with the Cherokee. The Cherokee used to be non discriminatory until President Washington introduced slavery along with the loom and planting crops. My family would have been connected to our ancestry, if not for the dishonor and greed shown by General-then-President Andrew Jackson, who was saved by the Cherokee and then stabbed them in the back. After their removal, I can not find my relatives. I should not lose my ancestry because it is convenient to do so. I may be Lumbee/Chickamauga/Melungeonor any other combination of Cherokee...but my ancestors state we are Cherokee. I wish to be recognized as such, and have Cherokee elders to turn to for guidance in our cultures and customs. My ancestors are remarked upon in the book "Intruders"; John Sears, Cummins and General Gabriel Slaughter, William Cummins and Reverand James Sears in the minutes book of Whitley County, along with John Ross... My ancestor, Joshua Radford Cummins applied in 1906 for Cherokee Citizenship.
