Name: Kathy Gibbs on Nov 10, 2006Comments: As the mom of a child with a heart defect, I feel this is so important. My son has done really well and I truly believe it is because he had immediate treatment. How much money will the insurance companies save by running one little test Possibly several operations, they expected to do several on Josh but he hasn't needed them because he was treated early.Flag

Name: Valerie Brown on Nov 10, 2006Comments: My son died from a CHD. The earlier you catch a CHD the better chance that child has. My sons first open heart surgery was at 3 days old! You need to know at birth what the 02 sat are. Is it any wonder why it is the #1 birth defect... 1 in 100 babies born with CHD! Time is extremely important!Flag

Name: Elizabeth E. Mercier on Nov 10, 2006Comments: My beautiful 13 month old son passed away from a severe congenital heart defect in October 2005. His condition would be immediately detectable through the use of pulse-oximetry. Luckily, I knew of my baby's condition before he came into the world, but I know another family whose son died suddenly because they had no idea that their newborn had a severe congenital heart defect. With a simple pulse-oximetry test, the condition could have been discovered. Please help other babies in memory of our beautiful children who have passed away.Flag

Name: Laine E. Chambers on Nov 10, 2006Comments: This petition is very important as it could save the lives of many babies! Thankfully we found out about our daughters complex CHD's while in utero, but not all families are as fortunate. A simple pulse oximetry test is the most non-invasive, easy test somebody could ask for to save lives. This test should be a part of all newborn screenings. We test their blood for many metabolic disorders, etc., why should be not test for something as fatal as congenital heart diseaseFlag

Name: Jennifer Pelkey on Nov 10, 2006Comments: Pulse Ox testing in newborns is a remarkable idea! We didn't discover our Matthew's heart defect until he was 3 weeks old. When we did get him to surgery/PICU, everyone was shocked that he lived that long without intervention. We were fortunate, but some children are not. This is a wonderful idea!Flag

Name: Karen Eustice on Nov 10, 2006Comments: Agree with petition for screenings. We were fortunate that an observant doctor detected a problem with my grandson, otherwise, he would have been sent home unknowingly having a very severe heart defect as HypoPlastic Left Heart Syndrome. The cost of this study seems quite small considering the benefits of screening.Flag

Name: Heather Packard on Nov 10, 2006Comments: I am a nurse and specifically have been a nurse in a pediatric cardio thoracic ICU. I have seen many babies born with congenital heart defects. Those babies who were born with unknown defects, most likely never had a pulse ox done after birth and some were sent home without knowing they had the defect until they come back crashing through the doors. I think it is very inexpensive to check a pulse ox and is a standard part of vital signs. PLEASE help get this law passed.Flag

Name: Susie DeLoach on Nov 10, 2006Comments: Many babies are sent home with undetected heart defects, only to be rushed to the hospital after they get home. If they are fortunate, it is not too late for intervention. Many times though, by the time parents realize there's a problem there is too much damage. Some of these parents have to bury their children and go home to an empty crib. There are simple tests that can lead to early detection and intervention. I hope that this proposal is successful, and that all of the other regions in our country follow suit. -Susie DeLoach, Founder of Our Hearts, Indiana support group for families affected by congenital heart defects.Flag
