The career of comedian Charley Chase is enjoying a renaissance and his work at Columbia Pictures is an important part of this filmmaker's legacy. Charley Chase had his hand in some three hundred films as either performer, writer, director and producer. He was in part, responsible for the formation of the Our Gang Comedies and brought Oliver Hardy to Hal Roach Studios. He groomed the talents of a young gag man/director, Leo McCarey, who would go on to win 2 Academy Awards for "Going My Way" and "The Bells of St. Marys". His films became the training ground for countless performers and writers. He was the number one worldwide box office champion in 1926 for his short comedies. Several of his motion pictures made at the Hal Roach Studios have been released to the home video market but the films he made at Columbia Pictures have never been available on video. From 1937 to 1940, Charley Chase worked in thirty four productions for Columbia; twenty as star of his own series and fourteen writing, directing or producing films with the Three Stooges, Andy Clyde, etc. All twenty Charley Chase Columbia shorts have been painstakingly restored and preserved and are awaiting release onto DVD. The names below represent fans who are anxiously awaiting Sony Pictures Entertainment to release this collection and who will be willing to purchase this much sought after anthology. Sony Pictures, please make the Charley Chase Columbia Series available to his fans so his work can be fully appreciated once again.
