This is a petition to designate four of the six tennis courts at Chaplin Park on Hilton Head Island, SC off limits to private lessons and on a “first come, first serve” basis. A public park designated as “public” should be made public. Currently, five of the six courts are used and monopolized during prime time hours by private lessons for the majority of the year. At times, every single court is taken for private lessons. Having to use sign-up sheets at the courts makes it a race to be the first one to sign up ahead of time. About 99.9% of free public tennis courts do not use sign-up sheets, and instead use the “first come, first serve” method of use. Arthur Ashe said, “Tennis should be accessible to all.” If you want this public park to be “public”, then sign the petition.
