I believe that, in the Watertown public school system, insensitive attitudes and remarks aimed at LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) students has always been a problem, but it is rarely discussed by school staff - and when a teacher overhears hurtful comments like these, they rarely react in any way. By signing this petition, I hope that Watertown Middle School students will try to be more open-minded and accepting, and will try to refrain from making serious, hurtful comments that may be detrimental to some LGBT students' self esteem.
