The letter W is an anomaly among letters in the alphabet. While most letters' pronunciation is a short sound or the letter's sound, W is unique in that its name is a word. "Double U" describes the common depiction of the W as two "U"s meeting together in the middle creating a different letter. The problem with this today is that over the course of history, our phonics have evolved to where the "Double U" more resembles a "Double V."
