Change School Start Hours Back to 7:20am for CHIJ Toa Payoh

We the undersigned, wish to add our names to the list of parents requesting for the reinstatement of the school start hours in the morning from 7:40am back to 7:20am. We call on Ministry of Education, CHIJ Toa Payoh alumni and school management committee and parents to:

(1) Support the reinstatement of the School start hours from 7:40am (since 2 January 2015) back to 7:20am.

(2) Set up a monthly parents forum with the School's principal to discuss any students who are late to school and to come up with alternative solutions to help these children to come to school on time at 7:20am.

(3) Start a monthly Parents forum with the School's principal and the MOE to find alternative solutions to help children who are still unable (after 5 times of late to school and 5 reminders to the child/parent) to turn up at school on time (such as visiting their homes and understanding how the daily schedule of the child is and counseling the parents to make a change for the better of the child education future).

By starting the school early we hope that our children could return earlier to have their lunch at least by 2:00pm - 2:30pm.

Currently with the delayed school starting hours to 7:40am, our children on school buses return home at 2:30pm to have their lunch only around 3:00pm. This is too late and their blood sugar levels have dropped resulting in a drop in energy and concentration levels. Thus they often need a nap after their "tea break" at about 4pm for half an hour and are unable to concentrate properly afterwards to complete any homework. Some children often do not have any appetite for dinner afterwards too. This is disrupting their normal meal times and in the long run bad for health.

Especially affected are the Primary 1 girls who have small stomachs. Having a meal between 9:20am to 9:50am is not enough at all given the long queues at the food stalls they probably have to queue for 10 minutes for food and only have 10-15 minutes to eat a quick bite before returning to class. Then this quick bite is expected to last them from Mondays to Wednesdays all the way to 2:30pm (almost 5 hours without food) when they return home for "tea break". This is unrealistic and my children have complained of dizziness at 2:30pm and are snacking on biscuits in their buses to stave off their dizziness which is a result of the drop in blood sugar levels.

We think that the school ought to consider having a lunch break for the students (especially the Primary 1 to 3 girls) who are still growing and are often hungry every hour or two. It would be good to consider a lunch break at 12:00 to 12:30pm for them which would ensure their blood sugar levels remain constant throughout the day and this would improve their memory and concentration in class to learn from the teachers.

After all as working adults we all would usually have our heavy breakfast sometime between 8:00 to 9:00am before we start work. And at 12:00 - 2:00pm we have our lunch break which means we work for about 3 - 4 hours in between. We ought to be fair to our children who have even smaller stomachs than adults that they are also entitled to a lunch break.

Dear parents, kindly comment on the time that your children board the school bus and when they arrive in school via school bus.

Thank you.
