Name: Mark Labeda on Aug 26, 2002State: VACountry: USComments: It's really sad that someone would want to pave over our history. I remember a few years back when land adjacent to the Manassas battlefield was to become a strip mall and Congress helped the fight. I live near Fairfax and the Battle of Chantilly has been obliterated except for an acre. Once the land is moved around we lose the sence of the battlefield and the sence of our history. Chancellorsville WAS Less's greatest victory and is so important . it cannot be paved over and must not. Please don't pave over our past. It is not progress, only a selfishness to our ancestors.! And what's more, it deprives us of our history. Once you've lost your history, you've lost your sence of place.Flag

Name: Tim Huebner on Aug 26, 2002State: CACountry: USComments: Dear Sirs: Living as I do in California, I can tell you first hand, the enormous problems associated with unrestrained development. Developers throughout Southern California have been given cart blance' to build where ever they desire, and the result is the degreadation of the quality of life for all. It would be a monsterous tragedy if Northern Virginia becomes just like Southern California, where smog, traffic and overcrowding rule. From an historical standpoint, the land at Chancellorsville is a vital part of our history, and should be preserved at all hazards. The last thing you need in Virginia is more strip malls and congestion. Historic tourism will bring more to that part of the state, than any housing development, with its faux Civil War era architecture. Don't be fooled, like we have been in California. Once the developer has his contract completed, he won't care that the quality of life for everyone in the area will suffer. He'll just take his money and run. Lastly, I'm coming to Virginia soon and would like to help your local economy, but only if you care enough to preserve the things that matter. Sincerely, Tim A. Huebner...Flag

Its historical significance cannot be understated, and its continuing and relevant role as a respite of education and enjoyment is imperative to the present and future inhabitants of the area. We ask you to be heroes in preserving the past for the future, rather than destoyers of our heritage. Very sincerely, Shannon W. TurnerFlag

Name: Tom Phillips on Aug 26, 2002State: VACountry:Comments: Please keep development out of our few remaining battlefields. What kind of history will we teach our students if there is no more history left to show them. Please do no fall for the promise of the "preservation" of a few plots of land. If the developer really does want to preserve history, then he should build else where.Flag

Name: Richard Whaite on Aug 26, 2002State: OHCountry: USComments: You can always build another commercial or housing development. You cannot build another historical site. I live in Canton, Ohio, where they tore down the house where William McKinley conducted his front-porch campaign for president. It's gone forever! Please don't make the same mistake.Flag

Name: John Baniszewski on Aug 26, 2002State:Country:Comments: If this deed is done, it will never be undone. Houses can be built in many locations. Our ancestors died on this location. The blood and spirits of Virginians is a part of this land. Honor their bravery and their sacrifice by preserving this place, so that your great-grandchildren will be able to stand upon this ground, and know what it meant to be a Virginian.Flag

Name: James Miller on Aug 27, 2002State: WVCountry: USComments: Developing the land in question is a bad idea for all concerned. It would not only destroy a fair chunk of core original battlefield but it would also have detrimental effects to the county as a whole. Gridlock, pollution, and a general reduction in the quality of life for county residents would happen if the re-zoning were to go through. Please re-think your positions and thank you.Flag

Name: Joseph R Loehle on Aug 27, 2002State: VACountry: USComments: As a former resident of Fredericksburg, I am deeply concerned about this proposed development. I already feel that the city of Fredericksburg sold out the community with Central Park II, and am afraid Spotsylvania County is getting ready to do the same thing. The Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania area is already hurting for water. More houses and businesses means more water consumption. Where will it come from Will it end up being like Frerick, Maryland having to pay someone to truck in water The amount of tax money garnered from a rezoning of this area is nothing compared to the amount that will be spent in the long run. I hope to move back to the Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania area in a couple years. I hope it hasn't become as awful a place to live as Northern Virginia currently is. And when I do move back, you can be sure it will be into an existing building and NOT one of these new fiberboard "houses." Please do not destroy the thing that makes Spotsylvania County great. We have visited the F'Burg/Chancellorsville area many times and the sprawl(Rt 3,etc)just gets worse every year that we tour the area. The mentality of these developers,in the name of 'progress', is unfathomable. They would pave over Gettysburg too if there's $$ in it. We try to do what we can though as members of CWPT & Friends of G'Burg. Please run this guy out of town (ala Brandy Station). ThanksFlag
