Name: David Duncan on Aug 22, 2002State: VACountry: USComments: I am not anti-development; growth is necessary. However, it is not necessary for Dogwood Development to build this development on this particular ground. Does it not strike you as ironic that Dogwood promises to build hotels for people coming to visit Chancellorsville Battlefield, yet this very development and the negative effects it will have on the battlefield will only serve to drive Civil War enthusiasts away People escape to Spotsylvania County for its serenity and beauty; please don't throw that away. Thank you.Flag

Assure that your children's children will inherit the same magnificent county that you did, not an irreversibly despoiled remnant amid a sea of concrete and asphalt. Heritage is no place for hucksterism. Stay the course.Flag

Name: Roberta Smith on Aug 23, 2002State: PACountry: USComments: We always comment on the natural landscape as we drive through Virginia. It would be a shame to loose it to new developements. We have learned about developement all too well in Pennsylvania, from our strip mining, and strip malls. Gettysburg has a KFC built on a battlefield area. Please try to encourage businesses to assimilate into an existing / preserved / vacant building before destroying your landscape. We love it.Flag

Name: Thomas Faircloth on Aug 23, 2002State: VACountry: USComments: As President of The Memorial Foundation of the Germanna Colonies in Virginia, Inc. I see the daily impact of Historic Tourism on our lives on the Rt. 3 corridor. Our Visitor Center on Rt. 3 hosts thousands of visitors each year, seeking to walk the trails of our country's most trying time. Approval of this plan will further decimate the already endangered corridor and serve to choke off the flow of tourist dollars into the economies of not only Spotsylvania, but Orange and Culpeper counties as well. Not only are our ancestors watching in horror, but our Great Great Grandchildren are watching your actions on this devastating proposal to forever alter and destroy our economy and our heritage. The Carpet Baggers are still among us. When this battle is over, they will retreat to their comfortable multi-million dollar homes in Northern Virginia where they belong, leaving us with the consequences and the mess. Beware.Flag

Name: Marshall Neathery on Aug 24, 2002State: NCCountry: USComments: Chancellorsville Battlefield is truly a national treasure. All efforts should be made on the part of all parties, especially developers, to see that this treasure is not compromised in the least, and lost forever to present and future generations of Virginians and Americans. The encroachment of developments will sound the death-knell for a valuable part of American and world history. Although I am not a Virginian, my ancestors came from Southside Virginia. I had a great, great maternal grandfather who was cited for being "a splendid soldier" at Chancellorsville, and was severely wounded there in Iverson's Brigade of Jackson's Corps. Please save Chancellorsville from development. With Sincere Thanks! Marshall NeatheryFlag

Name: Michael Brashier on Aug 25, 2002State: ALCountry: USComments: Any destruction of any Battlefield of any war by so called "development" is an injustice to the heritage of the human race. In particualar, we as Americans, both North and South, need to save both our heritage and all of the War Between the States Battlefields to preserve for our posterity the land made into holy ground by our forefathers whose blood was shed for what they believed to be right.Flag

Name: Ann L. Duval on Aug 25, 2002State: VACountry: USComments: There is a disturbing trend afoot in America. We each must chose whether to be guided by "the better angels of our souls," or sell-out. We can honor wisdom by recognizing that we have a responsibility to future generations to preserve our American heritage and set a tone of integrity in our decision-making processes. It is without character that elected officials usurp the power to negotiate a symbol of national pride, selling pieces of America to the highest bidder, and leaving our grandchildren with a legacy of warehouse department stores and housing developments that will not stand the test of time. Our ancestors gave their lives believing their acts of courage would be honored by future generations, and the memorials where they died and turned to dust are a symbol of honor. These grounds are the birthright of all Americans, the bone and marrow of America. Is it so much to ask that these places of courageous deeds be left alone and undefiled by greedFlag

Name: Sean Harris on Aug 26, 2002State: INCountry: USComments: I have been to the county several times and enjoyed both the histortical atmosphere and the local stores. However, adding a whole new commercial and housing section is just wrong on or around a National Battlefield. It is one thing to have urban growth we all have it however, a whole new city is one of the worst ideas i could think of for the area you are from. The area is very lovely maybe a housing development with stores not as large and or near the National Park would be more to everyones liking. Even in our area of Indiana, with no Historic sites, we have never tried anything of that nature. I have served in the military and lived throughout our Nation and the World and I have never seen or heard of anything like this before. Making money and a great economy is what people want however, I just can't imagine the problems you will have with a development of this magnitude.Flag
