   Comments: The Chronicle has long provided space for reactionary tantrums with a litany of sexism, racism, homophobia and other greatest hits of American bigotry. This piece, however, adds a layer of personal cruelty toward junior scholars that makes it particularly noxious and disgusting. I would encourage everyone to get your departments and your libraries to cancel their subscription to the Chronicle. This is not an isolated incident, and SURPRISE--nobody reads this paper anyway. Subscribing to it is a waste of money.

   Comments: I take issue with the Chronicle's decision to sacrifice the most basic tenets of respectful discourse in an effort to trawl for more page views. I don't care that it's "only" a blog; It is ridiculously inappropriate to mock young scholars by name solely on the basis of their dissertation titles. The Chronicle's decision to provide Schaefer Riley's "controversial" (read: mindlessly offensive) opinions demeans the entire enterprise.

   Comments: Until The Chronicle demonstrates that it does not elevate specious opinion above research-driven analysis, it is unclear what credible basis it has for claiming to be the journal of academe. If it cannot require its writers to meet such a fundamental standard, it should not retain them.
