Comments: Gee, it's hard to believe that you 'unknowingly' published an article with such a title without being aware of its content. Sorry, I now have very little, if any, respect for your organization.

Comments: We can not tolerate academic bullying. It cheapens and undermines our craft. It keeps the mind small and limited.

Comments: Recently, at the main n. American conference for my discipline, I gave a paper on representations of a particular ethnic group in the culture of my discipline in a panel on relations between the two cultures, organized by a colleague who is not a member of either ethnic group. A couple of hours later, while I was chatting with the Association President at a social event, I was approached by a senior colleague: the Pres. asked if we knew each other and, before I had a chance to answer, the colleague rattled off abruptly, "Who are you? Are you in our discipline? You don't look like you're in our discipline? Where do you teach? You look like you're from the U of *Ridiculing Name*!" You see, I bear "marks on the body" which allow people to separate me off into a different "race" (Loury). I am not a young graduate student and have seen enough of this kind of thing (although never in such a sustained way) to be able to ignore the comments, although my face must have revealed my shock and surprise, because the colleague added, "We can joke, can't we?" I was indignant and disappointed, but told myself that the colleague must feel very threatened or must have been very drunk to have behaved in this way. I recount this to provide evidence—if it were needed—of the fact that we are a long way from that racism-free world which Naomi Schaefer Riley imagines to exist because of the election of “the black president”. I hope that this gets back to the young scholars who were her target, so that they know they have the solidarity of a more senior colleague. I choose anonymity not because of any cowardice, but so as not to embarrass my colleagues in the discipline, who attended the panel in good numbers and engaged in intelligent and stimulating discussion with me and my fellow presenters on the topic. I’d also like to avoid possible identification of the offending colleague who either realizes what an ass s/he made of her/himself or, if s/he doesn’t, probably never will.

Comments: While Schaefer Riley has the right to express her opinion, she shouldn't be given a free pass protecting her from its consequences. In what world are the topics she so gleefully mocks not appropriate for humanities dissertations? And, bullying junior scholars in a major academic news magazine is poor form, and astoundingly unprofessional. It resembles nothing as much as Sarah Palin's attack on "fruit fly research," in that it lacks understanding of either the subject or the context of the work.

Comments: Instead of a condescending response, Riley owed an apology. It's hard to understand how she could make a statement like "Boy, life as a graduate student in a trendy discipline at a prestigious university sure is tough," much less in a journal of higher education. People aren't attacking her because she doesn't have a PhD; they're questioning how she can purport to know anything about the experience if she hasn't gone through it herself and doesn't understand the difficulties. I have to imagine her black readership feels the same way about her original article. Kudos for giving the students a forum to respond. I would advise not allowing Riley any more space to publish.
