Comments: This isn't about opinion, but about upholding the standards once established here at CHE. As a regular reader - although infrequent commenter - on this site, I could possibly stomach Ms. Riley's vitriol if her opinions were of someone already established in the field. However, she chose to attack three students who have not yet completed their dissertations without even seriously researching or investing time in the material currently available, as somehow proof that an entire field should be removed. Her unapologetic response, and the rather blase attitude of those who call the outrage at her blog an "overreaction" are especially unbecoming of CHE. In short: if I want to read a tabloid or pop-psychology-esque article, I go to Newsweek; I actually expect to learn something here or debate with others on arguments that are accurate and have some f*cking sense, not the tripe that's been published and latently defended.

Comments: The Chronicle of Higher Education's permission has really amplified the question of its ethics, motivation and editorial quality. This is shameful.

Comments: I was appalled when I read about Schaefer Riley's attack on Black Studies. Whats next the attack of woman Studies? Better yet lets not educate anyone who is not WASP.. give me break. To those students.. good for you for chasing your dreams and wanting to make a difference in the world.

Comments: Riley does not, in short, practice journalism, which is a process that involves making--and checking--warranted assumptions. But many people do not practice journalism, and there is not time to petition for all of their jobs. Riley's great offense is to perpetrate hate speech as academic journalism, and for this she should lose her job at the Chronicle.

Comments: I read the response by the CHE editor. So now CHE has officially elevated Schaefer Riley's tirade to something considered worthy of debate in CHE. I hope they will issue an apology for this response, as well as the original hate piece by Riley.

Comments: The work of journalists is to thoroughly research their subject matter. Schaefer Riley by her own admission did not read the dissertations she criticized--she failed to thoroughly research the dissertations and how they relate to Black studies. Schaefer Riley is a fraud and most certainly not a journalist. CHE is apparently making an attempt to grab readers by turning to tabloid journalism.
