Name: Jennifer Dutter on Apr 24, 2010Comments: The CGMS is so important to prevent severe highs and lows As a new type 1 diabetic I am careful and test 7-10 times a day. In the beginning I could feel my lows but now I dont and suddenly I will be at 50 and about to pass out. With CGMS I would not have to worry when I go to bed at night if I am going to wake up in the morning. Parents of diabetic children should be able to sleep at night knowing they will be alarmed if their childs sugar goes out of control at night. This seems like a no brainer in preventing further medical problems in diabetics and costing healthcare companies and families more money.US State: New JerseyName of Denied Insurance Company: United HealthcareFlag

My insurance is denying me because I do not fit their "criteria." The issue is that I cannot feel those lows anymore...I walk and talk in the twenties and thirties and then what? Do I have to wait until 911 has to administer glucose and be called? OMgosh!!! I stay at home with my kids.....If this happens when I am driving...then what??? Name: Anonymous on Jun 16, 2010Comments: The insurance companies need to understand that, although the CGM products are a big expense, they are and investment in better health in the long-term. It is inconceivable that a CGM product would be more expensive than the complications of poorly-controlled diabetes (dialysis, cardiovascular disease etc.) If a patient, or in many cases the parent of a patient, is willing to take the responsibility to wear a CGM product in an effort to maintain an adequate a1c, then that patient should be given the opportunity to do so. It is so frustrating that we, as educated parents, are trying to do the right thing by giving our children the tools to properly manage this disease and we are being fought every step of the way. The requirements for getting a CGM include having hypoglycemic episodes, but these are NOT the episodes that will cause long-term complications. They don't seem to care about the unexplained blood glucose readings that are 300+. If you aren't having lows then you are not a candidate.US State: VirginiaName of Denied Insurance Company: Blue Cross Blue Shield FederalFlag

He has no warning symptoms before these reactions. These episodes occur with increased frequency. I am constantly on guard to save him to the best of my ability when these reactions occur. We have frequently had the local fire and rescue team visit our home to give him intravenous glucose. I suspect some brain damage as a result of these reactions. I can always finger check before driving, and other activities where safety is a must. Doing this all the time is impractical. It is certainly not possible while sleeping. Name: Theresa Smallen on Nov 17, 2010Comments: I have been a type 1 diabetic for 14 years. I had my first child almost 6 years ago and had complications through my whole pregnancy. I was approved for the pump at 6 months pregnant. When my son was 1 year old I flipped the car we were riding in because I had a low blood sugar attack that I was unaware of. I just had a miscarriage last month and am having constant issues with my bloodsugars. I have already went through a 4 month suply of test strips in November and the month is only half over. This CGM offers diabetics a chance at a much longer and healthier life and I don't feel that insurance companies should have the right to deny anyone of that. I am in the process of trying to get approved for the CGM. Although my insurance company has not denied me yet I know the fight and length of time it takes to get approved for these things. I currently have United Health Care and I am hoping that my insurance company will see the importance of the CGM and work with my to get this.US State: MissouriName of Denied Insurance Company: United Health CareFlag

I have been fighting for almost 40 years to keep my husband healthy and free of complications. I remember a time long ago in NYC when insurance companies threatened not to pay for test strips. We won that battle. We all know how effective CMGS are. Many parents and spouses of type 1 diabetes can now even get a good nights sleep without calling911. Medicare and all insurance companies need to understand that this devive will save them money in the long run. and avoid the costly complications that can occur from type one diabetes , hospitalizations, ambulance costs and emergency room visits. Name: Anonymous on Apr 6, 2011Comments: I wore a cgm for 2 months during a diabetes study and my blood sugar was as close to normal a non-diabetic. It made a great improvement in my A1C. After the study I tried to get one and was told that only type 1 diabetics with frequent low blood sugars had access to them. The policy is, if you are almost beyond help and close to dying from diabetes you can have one. If it would make a tremendous difference in your awareness and ability to contol your diabetes on a daily basis - you haven't spent enough money on all the diabetes products yet. Just like the original glucometers that were only available in doctor's offices and hospitals until Dr. Bernstein campaigned for them to be used by ordinary patients. I've been a diabetic since the days of the useless dipsticks and am so frustrated that any leap in technolgoy that would help us is kept unavaible until we are almost dead.US State: CaliforniaName of Denied Insurance Company: KaiserFlag

Name: Elizabeth (Betsy) Clark on Jun 3, 2011Comments: I had my pancreas removed just over a year ago due to cancer. I am considered a "brittle or acute diabetic". I was not a diabetic prior to my surgery. Now, My sugar is my life. I check every 2/3 hours. I check before and after every meal. During the night I check-in with my oldest son every 2 hours. He lives 400 miles from me. If he doesn't receive a text within our assigned time line, and I don't answer his immediate phone call, he calls 911 (assuming I am in a diabetic coma). Doing everything I can with the tools I've been allowed, I am routinely faced with blood sugars in the 40's and 50's without displaying ANY symptoms. My record is 28 and 420. Again, my sugar is my life. HealthPlus has denied my CGM twice. Repeatedly stating that it is "not medically necessary". If my son and I sleep through our alarms, one of us has on more than one occasion, I may die. My sugar is my life.
